the food was worth probably 4 stars, but the service (just the cashier) at most 3 stars. we booked a table for 4, 3 adults and 1 baby. i went to order 3 bowls, and the cashier said: four people and you order only 3? i said one was baby. but what if it was four adults, what’s wrong with ordering 3 dishes? also, i wanted to wait for my friends to order desserts and she said you’d better order desserts now, with a bit inpatient and rude tone.

restaurant is not just about food. i pay the premium price also for the service. to be fair, other waitresses were polite and nice.

the food and dessert were ok. with the price, you would expect at least this quality.

this place is amazing! if you’re a tea lover then you’ll love it more! ordered the tonkatsu and wagyu beef bowl. the scrambled egg in the pork tonkatsu was so fluffy and abit sweet but combined with crispy fried pork and rice was amazing. i would have to say the wagyu beef bowl was my favourite. medium done beef slices with wasabi and their special sauce. lastly but not least was the green tea tiramisu with ice lychee tea. the two combined was perfect!

great food, relatively small portion sizes, and it is quite pricy. for the price they are charging you’d think they provide a bathroom for customers, but sadly... they dont. also expected the place to be a bit more grand, e.g. better seatings. but overall, great food.

coming from oriental background, i look for high standard japanese restaurants over the world. with no doubt juan has become one of my favourite japanese restaurants.

juan is cozy, clean and modern; service is attentive and polite. the menu is small but they do each of the items to perfection. we had the wagyu rice, unagi (eel) rice and black sesame mochi. i’m not going to write too much about each of the dishes, since they will give you a pleasant surprise - come try them yourself!

already planning to come back for another bowl of rice and the famed matcha tiramisu.

the food was amazing in this little tucked away restaurant. the menu is very limited, but it made it easy to order. we had the wagyu and tonkatsu don (coming from a malaysian/singaporean background there was no way i was going to order the hainanese chicken in a jap restaurant...). both don dishes were great, but what i really came for was the matcha tiramisu and it didn't let me down!! i could've eaten another 5 of these even after my mains!

ordered almost every item in the menu bar the smoked curry (they only serve 5 or so dishes) and 3 teas - long chin dragonfellow, jasmine and genmaicha all were very lovely! my fave was the tonkotsu with the crispy batter and perfectly cooked omelette. my friend thoroughly enjoyed the unagi dish which was interesting to eat because you poured a hojicha broth over it. flavours were spot on! although every dish was on the expensive side (expect to pay ~$8-9 for a pot of tea), you really do see the labour and effort put into all the finer details to make your experience go the extra mile. loved the ambience and interiors, and perfect for couples on their first date. if you’re able to wait patiently for a table (and food) and you don’t mind squishing up next to other diners then i would highly recommend coming here.

this place feels like a cafe which would open during weekdays, but it's actually opened more weeknights than lunches. would recommend to make a booking since there's not heaps of seating, but for walk in there are bar seating. they are quite 'high tech' in terms of using payment systems connected to ipads, and also they show their daily specials on photos on their ipads which i think is quite smart, since specials change and they can save ink since they don't need to reprint menus every day. the menu is super simple, with only 5 items available, 1 of them weren't available on the night but they had a special, so still a choice of 5 for mains, and one entree special, and 2 desserts. they suggest teas to pair with each dish as well.

one of the best japanese food in sydney!!
unagi hitsumabushi and wagyu are delicious and well-presented.

- unagi hitsumabushi ☆☆☆☆☆

- wagyu ☆☆☆☆

- matcha tiramisu ☆☆☆☆☆

cosy restaurant in redfern, good for a small group or couple.
they don't take a reservation, so you might need to wait outside if you are unlucky.
otherwise, juan is my go to place!!

very impressed about the quality of the dishes. both the wagyu and unagi dishes were down right amazing. the wagyu was just the right amount of fatty to go with rice to still taste clean whereas the unagi dish is definately something you cant get anywhere else. the tornado egg was creamy af and they also give you hojicha dashi stock/tea and toppings to pour halfway to turn it into a ochazuke dish. i thought the dish was itself was great before the dashi really amped up the taste of the whole dish. definately order these.

desperately wanted to try their black sesame warabimochi. but unfortunately it was sold out, apparently everyone orders it, so make sure you get in early! a must try, would say one of the best japanese restaurants in sydney.
