izumi

i'm a fan. i was very impressed with the quality of the fish and the craftmanship of their sushi chef. the oh toro and the amber jack ( a type of yellowtail) came enveloped in a very fine delicate seasoning and melted like butter in my mouth. we had the izumi roll which had freshly roasted seaweed that were crisp which enhanced the taste of the fish. the yellowtail and scallion maki rolls were also delicious.
we ended of meal with house made green tea ice cream that had just the right amount of bitterness to give it a kick.
the fact that it's a byob makes it so much more affordable. i'm definitely going back for more.

izumi is a japanese / sushi spot on east passyunk, in an otherwise mostly asian food-less strip of the area. it's got outdoor seating and some indoor seating in tables, hightops, and at the sushi bar. it's fairly clean, sleek, and modern on the inside. here are the gyoza, made with pork. they're served with pickled cucumber (which weren't particularly pickley) and already come doused and bathing in some dipping sauce. these were decent. here's the izumi sashimi sampler. we have surf clam with spicy miso, squid with smoked sea salt and lemon oil, fluke with tataki sauce, salmon carpaccio kaiware and shiso oil, and tuna with tofu vinaigrette. these were all excellent and super fresh! here are a couple of their specialty rolls. the one on the left had some spicy tuna and avocado and crunchies on top. the one on the right was a special of the night and had a spicy scallop topping. both of these were great as well. the des

disappointed. i have been coming to izumi since it first opened and it was wonderful at first. recently it has taken a turn for the worse. on my last visit, my seaweed salad had no dressing, the hot appetizer was undercooked and room temperature as was my duck dish which was also bland and i had to ask for rice. this is so disappointing.

good food but.... just tried to place an order with them for take-out...never in my life have i been told to "call back in 20 minutes" to place the order!! really? isn't the whole point of ordering take-out so that you do not have to wait???????
