a new favorite!. i frequent the iron hen at least once a week for lunch!
i have tried several of their entrees and have never been disappointed. the food is fresh, primarily local, and amazing! and for all of these qualities it's very reasonably priced! the restaurant itself also has a quaint, cozy, neighborhood feel (i love eating outside).
i highly recommend the fried goat cheese salad = incredible! i am also a big fan of the homemade, thinly sliced, sweet potato chips - yum!!

i am so thrilled that greensboro finally has a restaurant like this that offers healthy, delicious food that supports our local economy. please support them to so that we can enjoy this restaurant for many years to come!

hit or miss....but worth a try!. i've eaten at the iron hen several times, as i'm a big believer in supporting local restaurants and had varying results! the breakfast (although pricey by gboro standards) is fabulous. of other dishes i've tried, i've had the crab cakes (appetizer) and although a fairly small portion, the crabcakes are nice and light and made from high quality meat. the shrimp and grits is another success, flavorful and a perfect portion size. the mac and cheese was an enticing choice of side dish, but needs a bit of salt to bring out the flavor. the deviled eggs, also lack a bit of punch (where is the paprika!?) the true failures i've had from iron hen are in the meat category. the grilled chicken sandwich i tried was literally so tough and dry i could not finish it. i had to drink my entire glass of water just to it chew it up. i almost never send food back, but it was really dreadful, and was met with apathy by the waitstaff, which was disappointing. i also had their cheeseburger lately (with "melted" gouda") and when asked - requested that it be cooked "medium". what i received was a condiment-less cheeseburger with a thick hard slice of half melted cheese, on a well done burger. i loaded it with ketchup and made it work, but was absolutely not what i had expected.

there are definitely some great choices on the menu, but he meat dishes have left me unsatisfied!

one of my favorite place to hangout. i absolutely love the ambience and the vibe at this place. moreover , the food they serve is finger licking good . the staff is highly courteous and friendly. the service is great ,you don't have to really wait too long for your food. the place is a little crowded but not too much ,still it doesn't compromise on the the service. i will surely love to visit here again. its an amazing place to be.

my favorite restaurant spot. sure it's overcrowded and loud but that's because it is that good. people (myself included) will wait 45 min for breakfast it's so good. definitely worth the price and time. just be prepared for the atmosphere. i'm not a fan of being cramped and near others but for some of the best breakfast in town, i'll manage.

iron hen is yet another “looks good on paper” restaurant. the concept (fresh, locally sourced ingredients meets southern comfort food with an eco friendly twist) holds appeal, and several of the menu items look enticing, but the overall experience is underwhelming.

not my first time but i won't be back. loud, cramped space with insanely overpriced fare. my wife and i had eaten at the iron hen previously (in warmer months when we could sit outside), and we were not ready for the remarkably higher prices they have adopted since our last visit or the sardine-like layout inside. staff seemed indifferent to the headache-inducing noise or to our inability to hear them and messed up our order. awful experience overall, food was marginal and not reflective of the price or other reviews posted online. won't be back, would never recommend to anyone, zero stars.

not bad but should be better. iron hen shoots for several ideas i can appreciate in a restaurant -- they attempt to source local, and by extension, seasonal and perhaps more environmentally sound food. unfortunately, while laudable, this doesn't overcome iron hen's shortfalls, which i feel are plentiful. let us start with what for most people is the bottom line, taste: my experience has been very hit or miss here. the shrimp and grits were quite good, while on the same visit, my girlfriend's portobello sandwich was so vinegary she took the mushrooms off and ate just the rest. the quinoa hash i've gotten has been reasonably good for a light meal, but their signature "very good deviled egg" is embarrassingly lacking in interest. it is singly the most boring deviled egg i have ever eaten.

another note for those considering the iron hen, be prepared to peruse a sandwich-heavy menu. there are a few non-sandwich items, but the heft of their selection is sandwiches. also, echoing many other reviewers, you will find iron hen to be noticeably pricey. think $12 for a burger (albeit grass-fed), and $3 or so for a side. i have my suspicions on why these prices are what they are, which include being on the edge of a wealthy neighborhood and using locally sourced ingredients, but when it comes down to it, unless you're used to spending $20 for lunch in greensboro, it's going to make you expect really good food that you very well might not get.

ultimately, iron hen will be for me a place i rarely go. it's too expensive for the dice roll in quality i take in going there. however, i do feel like the iron hen is not far off. they just need to up their game a bit. i'd personally be willing to go much more frequently if they had consistently good food, including more non-sandwich offerings.

catered for a crowd. we needed a great caterer for a very special event, and the iron hen cafe was the perfect choice. from the first phone call, we knew we were working with an exceptional staff. the menu was quite unique - organic, local, fresh, and that's what we got! i have since gone back to purchase more the the now famous - bbq chicken salad. the exceptional delivery service from kim was very much appreciated & so efficient. glad greensboro has a restaurant that's dedicated to excellence.

not a place i'd go back to. this is one of those places where i simply don't see what many others seem to appreciate here - in fact, our lunch here was simply, completely bad - in ambiance, service, quality of food, and value - that doesn't leave much else to appreciate.

this is a small place with closely placed tables with uncomfortable, straight back, wooden chairs with no cushioning. this is a noisy place, and was today with only 3 other customers in house, and the music blasting away in the background. the acoustics here are just not good. we chose to move outside - the noise of the traffic on nearby wendover avenue was preferable to being inside.

we ordered 2 sandwiches - the 8 oz grass-fed burger with cheese, and the crab cake sandwich. each was $12, and came with a side and their signature "very good" deviled egg - which is 1/2 an egg. despite the fact there was only one order in front of us (2 folks ordering breakfast) it took a full 30 minutes to get our order. i didn't expect fast food service, but i didn't expect to age significantly over lunch either.

the burger was simply awful, with an underlying bitterness, and an almost rancid greasiness. this burger tasted like it had been cooked on a grill that had not been properly, or recently, cleaned - old oil or grease will leave a definite signature taste. the taste of the meat on the inside of the burger was simply without flavor. the hand-cut ff were only ok, limp and under-cooked - a ff should not curl over when picked up. the 1/2 devil egg was bland, with salt and pepper only marginally helpful. the cheeseburger, as served, costs $12, and would be way overpriced even if it was a good burger, and this was definitely not a good burger. the best burger in town would cost from $7 - $9, with a side.

the crab cake sandwich suffered from the same underlying bitterness; again i would suspect the grill on which it was cooked. the red bliss potato salad was, like the deviled egg, bland. this sandwich was also $12 as served and definitely not a value meal even if it tasted good.

maybe these folks do some other things well, maybe this was just a bad day, but what we experienced here was a totally bad meal - an uncomfortable, noisy environment; slow time out of a less than busy kitchen; poor quality food; and much less than reasonable value. i cannot image a scenario in which i would come back here.
