not the hidden gem i had hoped for.... this place is a little off the beaten path - it's not an area i would drive through unintentionally. it has all the qualities of a great hidden dive, except for the food. it was just average, not even very authentic, and they don't have real margaritas. it's not bad, it's just not that good. the decor is nice, staff is passably friendly and prompt, food is about a c+. i'd go back if someone else really wanted to, but it wouldn't be on my long list of choices of where to eat in san marcos.

good tostadas....that's it.. the tostadas were really good - the beans had a very rich buttery flavor. but tostadas alone do not justify a return visit.
the enchiladas were ok, and the guac was alright. i wasn't overly impressed with this place. i'm kind of on the fence as to whether i'd return or not, and that usually is what determines my vote.
if they had real margaritas, and not the wine kind, i think it would tip me more towards a 'like'.
as it stands, herbert's makes me wish there was a 'neutral' option.
