“obviously we don’t need your business”

extremely rude hostess. after seeing several parties seated who were smaller, bigger, later than us and incomplete., we were called about an hour later and literally waved over to the general direction of our table. we had no idea where to sit. so we decided to leave. she responded, “obviously we don’t need your business” 😮

keep that in mind, they do not need your business.

dirty place, worst food i've ever had. slimy chicken, had to return to kitchen, a really sorry excuse for chicken fajitas! don't waste your time!

i'm going to say this is a good solid tex mex spot, but with a few qualifiers. what i ate today is much better than what i feel is typical tex mex. of course all the basics are here. cheese enchiladas, crispy tacos, fajitas, chile con queso, etc. but it just seems that herbert's does it a little bit better than your average tex mex restaurant. for example, i had chicken enchiladas. normally enchiladas have that brown gravy that's a little heavy on the cumin and chili powder. herbert's serves their enchiladas with a sauce that is closer to salsa than a gravy. it set off the chicken and cheese perfectly. and the guacamole was some of the best around. i didn't need to add salt or lemon, and it was smooth with a few chunks. salsa and chips are excellent. the salsa had a slight burn. just enough to let you knew that it meant business. when you see pictures, you're going to see typical tex mex. but when you eat, you're going to taste top notch tex mex.

the wife and i are new residents of new braunfels.  she is vegan and i eat predominantly vegetarian.  we loved herbert’s because they had a vegetarian menu, great margarita’s, an outdoor area for the kids, music, and even welcomed the family dog on the deck.

we’ve been visiting about once a week for the past 2 months.  the food isn’t the best, but they accommodate us and all the pluses mentioned above.

until this week…  one of the wait staff told us the vegetarian menu, “is a lie…” what?  he went on to tell us, “the refried bean has the bacon fat mixed in, the rice is cooked in chicken stock.”  there really isn’t anything vegetarian about this place or their vegetarian menu.  are the tortilla’s fried in lard? chips too?

the wait staff confirmed this with the cooks and it seems the owner is a-ok with this…

what else are they lying about?

edit cherri s. 6/25/20.... edit

cherri s.

6/25/2014after the owner of the grocery store attached to the restaurant threatened to call the cops on me for "trespassing" (walking in front of his business' parking lot that is attached to the school's parking lot) while walking my 3 year old daughter to her daycare, i will never be back and support such a bully. shame on you, you're the exampe of what not to be for my daughter. someone should have taught you manners.

herbert's 'til i die!. been going to herbert's since the late 70s! have driven the 221 miles from dallas to have lunch, float the river, have dinner & drive home several times. start with an order of bean & cheese nachos, then a herbert's special. it is awesome.the decor has improved since i started going there, but its still qualifies as a "hole in the wall". service is really fast, food is always hot & the salsa rocks! i believe its serrano pepper based. herbert sr. is no longer with us, but jr. & the rest of the family have done a fine job of upholding the tradition. it's also right off the interstate and certainly worth the trip.

i am finishing up my meal at herbert's and i wanted to tell y'all about their establishment. the food was great, i had the, taco dinner, meat was perfect, taco was fat, the refined beans were smooth and mixed easily with the rice. the waiter came to our table quick, drinks and appetizers as well. all around good place.

this is the original tex-mex restaurant in san marcos. it was my second home at swtsu in the late 70's and early 80's; good food... good folks; comfort food; can't go wrong eating at herbert's. after all these years, herbert's is probably still the bony place in the county serving good menudo. enjoy!

the best!. since 1983, my husband and i have been going to herb's. both of my grandmother's were excellent cooks and i would compare herb's to their meals - everything is outstanding! herb's has been a favorite of ours going on 30 years. now, our son, his fiance and their friends go there too! we love it! don't ever change a thing.

not the hidden gem i had hoped for.... this place is a little off the beaten path - it's not an area i would drive through unintentionally. it has all the qualities of a great hidden dive, except for the food. it was just average, not even very authentic, and they don't have real margaritas. it's not bad, it's just not that good. the decor is nice, staff is passably friendly and prompt, food is about a c+. i'd go back if someone else really wanted to, but it wouldn't be on my long list of choices of where to eat in san marcos.

good tostadas....that's it.. the tostadas were really good - the beans had a very rich buttery flavor. but tostadas alone do not justify a return visit.

the enchiladas were ok, and the guac was alright. i wasn't overly impressed with this place. i'm kind of on the fence as to whether i'd return or not, and that usually is what determines my vote.

if they had real margaritas, and not the wine kind, i think it would tip me more towards a 'like'.

as it stands, herbert's makes me wish there was a 'neutral' option.
