birthday dinner

small place in rice village. due to size of the place tables are quite close to each other like in nyc. noisy, active place. food and overall service was excellent. plan to go back.

everything about this restaurant was fabulous. it boasts a well educated staff and a friendly well traveled owner. we arrived at about 4 pm when most restaurants in that area or closed. we were greeted with open arms. the menu is interesting and not overwhelming. we got to witness the waiters and waitresses preparing for the evening rush by the chefs by being educated by the chefs on each individual dish. it was fascinating. our waitress was able to recommend items and the owner evan talk to us about wine and then brought us a taste. it was just a very spontaneous wonderful late afternoon meal.

i hate that i had to skip over the wine menu, but alas i was still on the clock! for the food, our waiter told us everything is made to order and brought out immediately. apparently, they do not even have heat lamps, so your food really does not sit around back there for long. i ordered an appetizer because i could not resist green-n-cheese pie, i.e. spanakoptia. it is stuffed with fresh spinach the best feta cheese ever. the chef toasted it to perfection. it was so good. hands down the best spanakoptia i have ever had.

with so many restaurants opening in houston lately, sorry correction...with so many "good" restaurants opening in houston lately, it's hard to keep up and stay current. how does one decide or even distinguish which good ones to try or recommend? for us we stick with a simple formula, it must be a complete experience that starts upon entering an establishment and continues until we leave. that seems to separate good from the "damn that's good" spots! one new spot that fits the bill for us is helen greek food & wine. this cozy and quaint spot is serving up a seasonally rotating menu of modern greek fare, or as we say in urban swank speak "they put their stank on classic greek food"! additionally, if you are into wine they are pairing the menu offerings with a complete hellenic wine list.

this two-week old restaurant is knocking it out of the park with high quality, perfectly seasoned and cooked food. i have thoroughly enjoyed every dish i have eaten at this restaurant,  but they do some special magic with the fish and the refreshing greek salad always hits the spot. i would be remiss not to mention the outstanding greek wine program or not tell you, you shouldn't skip dessert.
