rich in flavors and architecture. so much has changed and yet, so much has remained the same since i have last visited the golden bee to the right of the entrée into the broadmoor enclave. recently renovated with a mega-bucks budget and an eye for impeccable detail, the immersion into a proper 18th century british pub is now complete and rather convincing to boot. the outer facade has changed a bit, and the outdoor rooftop patio is a sure crowd pleaser. better still is the preservation of the imported bar facade that gives the gb it's genuine charm. the new menu reflects an even deeper commitment to harken back to steadier times with heartier foodstuffs from which to draw sustenance whilst enjoying one's pint of ale. it lists scotch eggs, scrumpets, bangers and mash and the proverbial fish and chips with the traditional and somewhat minty mushy peas accompaniment. the cod filets are fresh, well-battered and super crispy on the outside, while still moist and flaky. it is a bit of a chore to get it right, and those worker bees do a fine job. the burgers are fine, but tend to be overcooked, so order one temperature level down to ensure yours is still juicy. the best offering were the cottage pie with a biscuit-like flaky crust and thick beefy broth with mushrooms, and the deeply flavorful shepherd's pie topped with a modest swirl of mashed duchess potatoes and generously laden with a rich mixture of tender lamb cubes surrounded by an earthy stewed gravy with carrots and parsnips. the intensely developed sauce was simply delicious, reflecting the careful emphasis on developing that genuine homemade taste. i really enjoyed it, and my british wife was equally impressed with her beef variant. we had certain expectations and the golden bee had exceeded them. the iced tea and hot coffee were very strong and the toffee, caramel and banana cream pie for dessert was equally assertive in bold flavors, but not at all too sweet. the prices reflect the surrounding five star ambience elsewhere on the compound and one needs to be prepared for a hefty bill even at the very casual pub dining room, as the entrees range from $13 to $16 each, with drinks starting at $3.50. things can add up quickly. nonetheless, we enjoyed our youngest daughter's birthday meal in this warm, welcoming environment, that featured authentic pub fare for even the most discriminating anglophile. cheers!
