fox on the quay restaurant

we have been twice now to fox on the quay, and the food is awesome, we can't fault this, but what was disappointing was the front of house staff, two long faced cold rude young women that didn't make us feel welcome at all. we had it the first time, but thought great food, but we will give these young women the benefit of the doubt,they might of just had a bad day, but no the second time was worse. we cant bring ourselves to try again, no matter how good the food is.

the previous reviews are very old and totally misleading regarding the amazing food and service at this restaurant.

absolute freshness and magnificent combination of flavors is the totally consistent experience from this well-established and popular restaurant in the ahuriri area.

great service and lovely meals. plenty of options for mains and they were more than happy to change a few things for us. it is a bit loud but you soon get used to it. recommend the polenta cake.

attentive and friendly waiting staff, high quality food, excellent tasty meals: correctly sized portions and served with thoughtful timing. nice atmosphere and reasonably priced. what more can i say, it's a pity i have lived next door for two years and have just discovered this restaurant, i will be returning.

we had a group of around 14 and a set menu. all meals were delivered together and to a very high standard. great food cooked well everyone was very happy. having a number of annoying food allergies (gluten, dairy, egg and fish!) the menu and staff were accommodating. being a typical kiwi i choose to forgo the dessert (included in the cost) rather than cause a fuss but the chef went ahead and prepared a delicious dessert especially for me (without asking) which was such a surprise and delight - it turned an excellent dinner into an unforgettable one. great wine selection as well.

fantastic food and ambience.
had heard quite a few very positive reviews about this restaurant and very pleased i was taken there.
booking essential as the place was full so was pleased i had booked earlier in the week.
the service was prompt, friendly and very helpful.
the quality of the food was amazing and the prices very reasonable.
fox on the quay exceeded our expectations.
will definitely return and recommend this wonderful small restaurant to everyone we know.

a restaurant recommended by fellow restaurateurs is a good recommendation indeed. fox on the quay was a last minute choice for my birthday dinner on sunday. they were good enough to take us at short notice, which was a great thing given the lack of hawke's bay dining options on sunday evenings.

at $300 for four, there are plenty of excellent choices out there right now and if customer service is as important as what is served up on the plate, then there’s a wee way to go here. if fox is aiming for more locals to add to the already bustling bluewater hotel guests who come for dinner, then you know what needs doing now.

this is fine dining at it's best. meals were absolutely divine and very generous portions. our pet hate is waiting to long to be fed and between courses, fox on the quay did not let us down at all in this way. our waitress was just the way we like it, she made sure we were happy and did not want for anything and then left us to enjoy our experience. we will be back!! :-)

service was appalling. friday 10th of august. the main front of house person was rude and argumentative. 1 person in our table of 12 had not turned up after 30 minutes so they refused to take our order because the chef didnt want to stop and start cooking for our table. after another 15 minutes we asked again for our order to be taken. it then was but we were told it wouldn't be given to the chef until our missing person arrived.
2 of our table had to leave because of time restraints, being there for 1 hour already and being told our order was being held. after complaining again and taking a vote to leave if our meals were not on the way, our order was given to the chef.
our table pointed out that for this many people to be held up by one is ridiculous and that they would loose several hundred dollars in food and drink, the reply was 'it won't be that much'. ultimately we were given complimentary bread but with no apology or explaination. when our late person did arrive he did not order any food anyway!
i must say that everyone throughly enjoyed their meals and desserts, amazing food. its a pity that the experience wasn't as enjoyable.

my wife and i eat here regularly and i've joined other groups that have chosen to try it. excellent food everytime. good prices and while the building doesn't have much character the experience has always been very positive.

called at short notice for a table for three on a wednesday evening and we were welcomed by a friendly atmosphere and a busy little restaurant. the service was top notch and the food matched it perfectly. two of us had the signature dish(hawkes bay competition)which was well executed with everything perfectly cooked , my wife had the chicken dish which she is still gushing about. desserts were yummo(creme brulee and bread and butter pudding). great atmosphere and cant wait to go back. very good value for money to with a totally assessable wine list. thanks for a great evening !

i have only been to fox on the quay once and will probably never go back.

the food was divine and i mean totally awesome! ... however their coffee was some of the worse ever, to the point myself and my two companions refused to drink it.

also the owner needs to learn to handle constructive criticism as after learning of our views on the coffee became incredibly rude and sullen.

sorry but they lost otherwise happy customers :(
