superior. when i walked up, i was unsure about eating at this place because it was in a strip mall. when i went inside, the restaurant was full, including every seat at the bar. since there was no hostess standing at the entrance, i considered making a break for it, but i’m glad i didn’t. fortunately, there was a high top available that was perfect for one – the worst part of traveling for work is eating dinner alone.
the service was outstanding. my waitress, nicole, was very attentive and timed all of my food perfectly. as soon as i finished my soup (clam chowda), the salad came. no sooner had i put my fork down and my main course arrived. my water stayed full and she was attentive without being all over me.
i got there at a quarter after 6 and was pleased to discover that happy hour was still on until 7. i ordered the house cab because the specialty drinks were on sale for like 6 bucks and the beer did not have prices beside it. the cab seemed like a good value, and it was good but not great. worth the 3 or 4 bucks i paid for it.
the food was sooo good. before i started, nicole brought me some really yummy bread that was similar but tastier than the bread at stake & ale. as mentioned, i started with new england clam chowder (easy to screw up), which was fantastic. i wanted another. next, i had the caesar salad as my #2 side because i prefer caesar over house salads and i wanted to stay on the light side. i’m glad i did. it had the perfect blend of cheese, grated pepper, and just the right amount of croutons. i hadn’t planned on spending as much as i did for my meal, so i struggled over the menu when selecting an entrée. nicole was adamant that the fish was great and the restaurant’s specialty, and she was so convincing that i felt compelled to order a fresh fish entrée. i love fish and i can’t eat it at home because my wife hates even the smell, so it really didn’t take too much to convince me. the next struggle was – which one. none of the options were really my favorite choices, although they were typical choices that you would find at a place like legal seafood – high-end, very popular fish like swordfish, trout, tilapia, sea bass, and salmon – i typically order flounder but it wasn’t on the menu. i am ruined on salmon since i caught my own in alaska and it always disappoints if i am adventurous enough to order it in a restaurant. not only did the salmon at florida’s fresh grill not disappoint, it was as good as when i cook it myself. the quality of the meat was excellent; the meat was cooked perfectly; the portion size was just right; the presentation of the plate was appetizing; and i was served the food only seconds after it appeared in the window. when i was ordering, i also struggled with the sauce that goes on top of the meat, so nicole brought me both the mango salsa and the jalapeno bacon sauces. the mango salsa paired well with the salmon. i mixed the jalapeno bacon sauce with my steamed spinach. i was concerned that the jalapeno bacon sauce would be too hot, but it wasn’t hot at all. it did pair well with the spinach, though. hungry yet?
i hadn’t planned on getting desert – i’m not really into sweets – but nicole spoke the magic words: chocolate crème brûlée. how could anyone resist those words? the ccb was like chocolate mousse that had been torched on top with raw sugar. the whipped cream (i believe) was freshly made, not the store stuff. i was different; it was good; it paired nicely with my 2nd glass of cab.
as far as value – i escaped there for less than 50 bucks (including tip). i would have paid twice that for this delicious meal and wonderful service. yes, re-read that last sentence; i would have willingly paid double for my meal knowing what i know now.
the atmosphere was crowded. i couldn’t hear the tv and it was on espn but not a game. where i sat, i could watch the order come up from the kitchen in the window, which was interesting enough to keep me off facebook, although i really didn’t have time for social media or scrolling through my phone because nicole timed all of my plates so perfectly.
final thought – when i walked outside into the perfect 68 degree november evening, i thought to myself – damn, it would have been nice to eat out here too. although i might not have gotten a waitress as fantastic as nicole. thanks for the great food and great service.
