my sister and i took our time getting ready on sunday morning. we had such a good night’s rest (at least i did…), and so we didn’t feel rushed when it came time to leave. we stopped by the breakfast buffet to see if there was anything good, but the crowds and the mess already created was a turn-off, so we decided to just leave and save our appetites for lunch.

earlier this year, dennis invited me to join him for lunch at a vegan restaurant called evolution fast food. it's not in the heart of hillcrest, but rather a little farther south, located next door to the original extraordinary desserts. the parking lot is tiny but there's always street parking. you also have the option of going through the drive thru, which fits with the "fast food" name and theme. dennis mentioned it's a bit awkward due to the sharp turn to the first window (hug that curve when you drive in)! after ordering, you wait a few minutes at the second window for your food and then continue on your merry way.

amazing food!. i was in san diego for three days and ate here three times. it would have been 4 times but google listed their closing hours wrong (!!!). (they close at 8pm in the winter).

i had the buffalo sandwich each time but the strawberry shake, cookies, raw tacos, and friends were all good too.

i hope they expand as fast as possible!!!

evolution fast food has undergone a number of changes over the years including three name changes. once called "nature's express," this small, mostly take-out, vegan fast food joint is one of my best memories from my last trip to san diego several years ago. so when i found myself in this city again with only a couple nights to eat, i knew one of the nights would be at evolution. evolution is located just outside of the gaslamp quarter in downtown san diego. it is a very small restaurant with a drive-thru and seating for just a few inside at the counter with additional seating outside. what i loved the most about evolution the last time i was here was that they made nearly everything in house. so, i was a little disappointed to see that they were now serving gardein burgers along with their housemade burgers. well, at least they still have the housemade burger. i placed my order and took at a seat at the counter. this place hasn't changed much. they offer fresh salads, raw food, and dr

good food made quick. evolution fast food is good food made quick but without sacrificing quality or healthiness; they are actually 100% vegan. the overall vibe is one of peace and tranquility. we visited evolution on a sunny day and the cool breeze wafting through the patio area was a welcome respite from the heat of the midday sun. we came in search of a light lunch in a relaxing atmosphere and that is exactly what we found at evolution fast food.

at the top of our food sack were the sweet potato fries. but they were definitely not traditional fries. they were actually shaped like potato chips. some were crisper than others and were very lightly salted. the crispy fries resulted in that satisfying potato chip crunch. those that were not quite as well done were a bit chewier - more fry like. the sweet and salt combination is always a winner and in this case you are allowed to enjoy the subtle sweetnessof the sweet potato. sweet potato fries are a slightly healthier alternative to regular fries so you can eat them without the guilt that consuming regular fries usually brings on.

evolution's homemade black bean burger consisted simply of blackbeans and various spices. while it looked like a standard burger, the consistency was that of refried black beans packed together to create a burger. the vegan cheese tasted surprisingly like nacho cheese, without being too in your face. the tanginess of the pickles complimented the smoothness of the cheesy burger nicely. i ate my burger open faced so that i could experience the burger and its toppings without the overbearing presence of the bun. after making short work of my burger, i turned my attention to the burger bun. it was light and fluffy. the grains contained within it were whole and fresh. the bun on its own was delicious but i felt that it would have overshadowed the burger had i consumed everything together. i also tried a bit of the veganaise. veganaiseis an egg-free, dairy-free mayonnaise substitute. i am not a fan of mayonnaise, i find the concept of it unpleasant and the taste is too rich for me. veganaise, on the other hand, was light and vaguely had the taste and consistency of whipped cream cheese. like their other toppings, the veganaise was applied minimally, making it a co-star with the burger instead of the headliner.

i was completely prepared to dislike my husband's daily greens juice. happily, i was pleasantly surprised. the ingredients combined together perfectly, not one overpowering the other. each sip brought forth a different flavor - first apple, then cucumber, followed by the kale, with lemon providing a backdrop for all three. while most juices created from these types of ingredients tend to be harsh in their flavoring -this juice managed to be subtle while still reminding you of what you were drinking.

like most hidden gems, i was not all that impressed with evolution fast food when we first pulled into their small parking lot. given its name i was expecting a slick, shiny storefront with plastic booths and perhaps funky techno music in the background. evolution fast food is not slick and shiny. it is however, a small, unpretentious dining establishment serving up good food quickly that is also good for you. sure, it is more expensive than the burger king located around the corner. but when was the last time you got a handmade burger and fries with a fresh juice from there? in this case, you get what you pay for. i would happily fork over a few extra dollars for their friendly customer service, quality food and relaxing atmosphere. for me evolution fast food is not only an evolution in food but also an evolution in dining experiences. so grab a burger and some juice and head out back to enjoy the breeze and fountain - life is too short to pass up experiences like this one.

i'm a vegan living in el cajon so there's nowhere local to eat out. evolution is great because it's only a 30 minute drive and is located near the balboa dog park for my best friend. the food is awesome! their chicken burger with veganaise is delcious; the "meat" is crunchy how i like it. the strawberry shake tastes like sucking rich cake through a straw! the flax berry blend smoothie is a meal on its own and great cheating when i haven't eaten my daily fruit. evolution's daily greens juice is terrific except for the kale taste even when i specified spinach, but it's a small price to pay. daily greens juice is great when i'm sick; it perks me right up! the cheesecake is phenomenal! rich, creamy, smooth blueberry is my favorite and appeals to my "junk foodie" personality. evolution is my sunday delight.

the restaurant was easy to find but it was way overpriced for burgers and fries. i appreciate a vegan fast food place and i'll probably eat there again but not for the burgers. the strawberry shake and sweet potato fries were what won my heart (and my wallet). it also would've helped if they had better quality soy cheese-i can't stand that kind that doesn't melt. all in all though i liked it.
