awesome. lovely food lovely service beautiful atmosphere. my only gripe is that compared to similar places its a little pricey.

i went to try this place with my wife. as we were really loved old esplanade.
i would really like to say that just buy a $4.99 pizza it will taste 100 times better then this place. we ordered pizza, garlic, rosemary bread (they used to have bread & dips simply awesome). it was just bad. after that got pizza which was worse. felt like got a round piece of indian roti and chuck some olives and other stuff on top. really not worth it.

looks good inside, the change over. beer was good. but in mire smaller glass.

if you want go for enjoyment and not really care for food then this is the place for you.

esplanade is one of our 'locals' and we've been 4 times for dinner. the score is 3-1. (there were teething problems early on, it seemed). the food is simple, fresh, flavoursome and well-presented. certainly the most similar dining experience we've had to memorable meals enjoyed in italy although the pizzas are less spartan than traditional italian fare. the pasta dishes also focus on freshness and simplicity rather than the multi-flavoured volume approach that is the norm in dunedin. wait service is prompt and unfussy and table service is unpretentious. family friendly. decor is simple but classy and refreshingly non-formulaic. yes, the drinks are overpriced and i'm not an allpress coffee fan. (there are better local roasteries; try bravo). oh, and they have a water bowl (outside) for your thirsty dog after a morning beach walk.

amazing coffee! best i've had in months. second time i've visited dunedin and stopped here for lunch and the coffee has been incredibly good (had a short macchiato this time). pizza was also delicious, setting beautiful overlooking a stormy ocean crashing against the esplanade, and service exceptional.

esplanade restaurant, st clair | i love a great restaurant on the beach. there’s something about being seaside and eating amazing food that makes a dining experience even better. i found the esplanade restaurant on st clair beach in dunedin, mainly by accident. i had spent the afternoon wandering the beach, looking for sea lions and exploring the lighthouse walk, as any typical tourist would do. i had googled and seen some good reviews for the restaurant but in no way did they accurately describe how incredible the food was, nor the bustling and exciting atmosphere when you walk in.

always a great place to take friends or your family for a more classy lunch or dinner. the food is very yummy and the view of st clair is such a nice treat while you sit down to devour your meal. i recommend the beef lasagne paired with their whittakers chocolate shake.

never been in dunedin, we were told that esplanade has amazing food. this was not wrong, firstly it is set next to a beautiful beach. for those who love a view this is special 😍
drinks menu was good, a few cocktail choices, wine choices were good and reasonably priced and seemed to have the best beer menu that we found over the weekend.
for starters we had baked cheese, amazing! meatballs, super tasty, arancini was light but wasn’t our star. we ordered the fries (massive portion) probably get this if you have more then two people. pizza’s are woodfire and delicious.
service was very good, waited 5 minutes to be seated. overall it was well priced, we were very full. if you don’t eat everything, they are happy to pack it up for you to take home. great experience 🙂

i came here with a group of 4 during peak time. i was informed they don't take bookings, so we ended up waiting about 15 minutes for our table.

once we were ready to sit the majority of my table decided to order pizza and share it. we were happy with the service during the ordering, our waiter made suggestions and explained the menu well.

the pizza i ordered had a perfect amount of cheese and the base was nice and crispy. the rest of my table throughly enjoyed their pizzas too.

esplanade has a prime location on the st claire esplanade so i'm glad they are using the space well and are putting efforts into the presentation of the restaurant.

i will come back with another group in the future.

overpriced but yummy as per usual. their fries are on point and their whitaker’s milkshake is so so good 😍 just wish i don’t have to spend $50 on dinner or lunch each time i go 😭

great place to visit when hungry for seafood. the calamari and fish i got was tasty and the portion size was really good. i’d definitely go back for seconds. the service was great too.

lovly spot on the corner, good service but the food just did not wow me. looked forward to a mediterranean type feed but it feel short. i ordered seafood antipasto plate. but to much picked veg and no dips to enjoy the bread with. seafood was ok. my son did not enjoy his sausage pizza as it did not have tomato base. this place could be great in this location but i think they might be spoiled by not having to work hard getting people in as it’s a great location.

good solid food all day long. always had good service. at its best for a casual pizza and beer. great views. just beware that the pizzas are those traditional italian types, so don't go expecting a heavy meatlovers with extra bbq sauce :)

esplanade has a cosy feel and is perfectly located looking out onto st clair beach. i go here at least once a week for either a “pics & whitaker’s shake” or for one of their delicious pizzas/pastas. it is on the pricier side of italian cuisine... but it’s always nice to treat yourself while looking into the rolling waves!! the food tastes authentic and the service is on point. the owner is one of the loveliest restaurant owners i have encountered and makes us all want to keep coming back to support this truly wonderful place. will be coming back on the regular... as usual - @gastrogeeny

a place with a good view, good food and good vibe. the staff is really great and accomodating. they serve no fuss italian.

tried the salami pizza, mezza veg platter and garlic fries. the herb garlic fries stole the show. id say they are a must have. overall a good place to dine in.

returns: sure
pricewise: $80 for two.

hmmm. i really didnt have good experience here. i dress very casual and carried my school bag that day. when i entered and ready to have my dinner, one of the waitress asked me if i am ok with quite strange tone and facial expression. she didnt want to serve as she didnt bring the menu until i asked. so i am wondering why. racial discrimination? or she thought i dont have the consumption ability to dine here by her judgement from my appearance?
