i was disappointed with the food at elkwood shack.  i expected to get mouth watering dry rub ribs, instead my ribs were dry and tasted like it had been heated several times.  the pecan pie, grilled cheese, and rueben sandwich were tastless.  my granddaughter enjoyed the barbeque pizza and cinammon roll.  it was our first and last visit.  i left a $5 tip at the register, which i shouldn't have because it was totally self served.  we had to go to the register for more ice and a carry out containter.  most people ordered the fish tacos, which looked good.

i deleted my old review to repost this after my last visit. i've been to elwood's many time and while i feel they can be a hit or miss type joint, this visit was a big hit.we shared pulled pork nachos and they were delicious. perfect pork, tangy bbq sauce and a cheese sauce over crisp (but from a bag) chips were so good.i had the debris po-boy. it recently won commercial appeals "best sandwich in memphis" and for good reason. it was maybe the best sandwich i have ever tasted. think shredded pot roast and gravy served on a very fresh hoagie bun. it may sound a bit pricey at $13.00 but seriously one sandwich could easily feed two.my companion had a ham & swiss and reported it to very good as well. she said the roll it was served on was as fresh as she ever had.yes i've had a couple of misses at elwood's but for the most part this place is a winner.

i went on sunday 10/2/16 for lunch takeout. ordered a club sandwich and it was deliciuos. i can't wait to try other items on the menu. i tried going to elwood's shack during the week around noon and it was packed. all tables outside were filled, and parking was difficult.

i ate here a couple weeks ago. it was amazing. i had the texas patty melt and loved it. also got some bbq nachos and shared with a buddy. they were great. the staff was nice considering it was a lunch rush. took a bit to figure out where it was as it sits back from summer a bit. definitely recommend if you are in the area. seating is limited, so off peak would be best

they have some veggie options, but i wasn't hungry enough for a full meal ... fortunately i had just enough to room for the maytag blue cheese jalapeño coleslaw. i'm a 6th generation texan, so the bbq sauce was strange to me, good, but different... sweet & smokey. we think the ice tea has crack in it, we can't stop drinking it.

a few weeks ago, the commercial appeal held a contest for the great memphis sandwich showdown. elwood shack's debris po'boy sandwich bested 31 sandwiches from well-known eateries in the memphis area. paul and i left the parkways via sam cooper boulevard last saturday for lunch to find out what the fuss was about.

the menu at elwood's shack in east memphis (enter from lowe's parking lot) is large and overwhelming and you won't find the debris po'boy on it. don't panic. the king of sandwiches is listed on a specials board next to the cash register. we knew that one of us would be ordering the debris po'boy but also wanted to try some other items on the menu. we saw many great sandwiches, pizzas and tacos coming out of the kitchen. after the po'boy, we ordered a spicy italian sub, the maytag bleu cheese and jalapeño cole slaw and the tater salad.

we found no reason to question the supremacy of the debris po'boy. everything was right in the world during the minutes it took to eat this juicy roast beef sandwich. nothing else mattered.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

the debris po'boy isn't on the menu. look for it on the specials menu beside the cash register.

the cured meats in the spicy italian sandwich were delicious but no match for the debris po'boy. we ate each half of the entire po'boy and nibbled on the spicy italian. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

lesson learned. save your calories for the debris po'boy. one sandwich really can feed two people.

we really liked the spicy jalapeño peppers and sharp, creamy bleu cheese in the cole slaw (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2). the mayonnaise to mustard ratio made a delicious tater salad. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

see placeatthetable.net for more details.

good food. kitschy decor is not a distraction. the bbq is good. try the tacos if you go.
patio dining is ok if you don't mind the traffic from lowes.

we always enjoy the food here. it is always fresh and so many different things to pick from. we've tried almost everything on the lunch menu with no complaints! my only complaint is that there's not a lot of seating and in memphis outdoor seating is not always fun.

my single favorite restaurant in the city.  easily the best barbecue place, determined only after an exhaustive and objective sampling of ribs and pulled pork sandwiches across the city. best barbecue pizza, which you never find at a barbecue place. i didn't think i liked beef brisket until i tried their guinness-marinated sandwich.  bbq quesadilla is solid go-to. very authentic italian sub. jerk chicken wings with a slice pineapple! they're the only place that smokes and cures their pastrami for the ruben. the spinach artichoke quiche was appropriately decadent. huge portions, reasonable prices.  they are just deadly serious about every single menu item.

only area of improvement? the decor. shotgun shells, hunting heads, duck dynasty posters, and sports on every tv. but i'm honestly too enraptured with the meats to mind much.
