greasy indulgence. any time of the day is the perfect time for the chubby checker burger with a side of poutine. cream cheese on a beef burger is just ingenious. the food is nothing spectacular but it can definitely hit the guilty spot. staff is great!

love that place. that's where i go for a nice meal. quick, fast and efficient service. love the ambiance and the staff is quite friendly too. there's something for everyone on their menu. great portions too. parking is usually not problematic. i love that place! :)

atmosphere and staff. i can't in good conscience recommend the esd because what people say is true: the prices are too high; the poutine is mediocre (which in this town, means don't bother). it is a great place to hang out, though, grab a milkshake, and chat. way less pressure to vacate the table than, eg: zak's, in the market.

not the way to start your day. the elgin street diner may be just fine if it's the wee small hours of the morning and you're finishing off an evening of bar hopping. the diner itself is nice enough. unfortunately, it would appear that the staff here have been dealing with the late-night bar crowd for so long that they treat everyone as if they have just crawled over from the last bar, so don't expect any pleasantries here. as for the breakfast, not one person in our party got their food the way they had requested and all the meat appeared to have been sitting on the grill or under a heat lamp for a few hours before it hit our plates. if you're looking for a breakfast spot to start your day off right, this is probably not the place you want...keep looking...there's no shortage of better restaurants in the area.

bland, tastless, over priced food. the service was o.k but server should be better groomed and cleaner clothes. the food is over priced and bland.

disappointed. we chose this stop on the strength of the reviews. all we wanted was a burger and poutine and both disappointed. the food came no more than five minutes after ordering, which suggested to me that the burger had been pre-cooked. mine tasted like pre-cooked three or four times. "taste" is the wrong word. it was dry and tasteless and hard to choke donw. the poutine was barely warm, with no meltiness to the cheese at all, and a nasty beef gravy. we won't be back.

you go to the elgin diner for.... the quality of the staff. they remember what you like and how you like it. where else in ottawa do they greet you with a green tea and i am no longer a regular there.

my favourite dish there is the blueberry pancakes-light as a feather dusted with caster suger. (i usually split and order with a friend). the eggs are always exactly the way you wanted and so is the bacon-i like their baked beans too.

and what a place for politician watching!

had the standard poutine - a staple item - apparent the one which launched them to being renowned as the best in the city. the one thing that i did enjoy was the warm welcome at the door and the wait staff are constantly smiling and cheerful. as for the poutine, the good thing is that the fries seemed to be hand cut in the kitchen but the bad part was that they were massively over-cooked! the great thing about the gravy was that it not over salted as most are, this was a delight! there were plenty of cheese curds as well! overall, since i have not been else whether for other offerings for poutine, i cannot say this was the best. having been exposed to poutine from quebec - it's the gold standard by which i measure all others.

24 hour diner. this place is alright - when its 3am. there is nothing special about the food here, and the prices are pretty high. usually i prefer to go to dunns down the street for late night food. the service at esd is great. i usually have a good time, but the fries are thin, sometimes overcooked, and usually a little too salty for me. i may go back...

get's r done. the shakes are good, the servers have always been really good to me.

i tend to stay away when the bar let's out. the place could use an overhaul and better cleanliness.

denny's, but better food and a little character

a diner in a popular area.. the décor is pleasant, the prices a bit high when compared to what expectations are for a diner, the quality has varied over the years, sometimes very good, sometimes mediocre. but the service has always been good, and they are open at all hours, something which can not be said for most establishments. summary, downtown? hungry? too lazy to make your own snacks (drunk?) well, the diner will be open and ready to serve.

good service. not sure about the fries.. this diner is pretty impressive. it has good customer service and it is clean. although it may be somewhat overpriced, i think it's definitely worth a try.

i ordered a salmon burger meal...which comes with coleslaw salad, a dill pickle, and fries. the burger was cooked well...not to the point where it's too coarse, but it was a bit dry. the fries were hard to chew though...and they gave them to you in huge portions. not that great. kind of wished that they gave me fries that were not so hard to chew on...but it was fine.

the poutine looks good but i haven't tried it yet...so i can't give any comment on it. probably a good place to hang out during the night.

it is what it is. go for speed, poutine and then head for home. this is an "after hours" establishment and it serves its purpose. i wouldn't advise eating here outside the drunken relhm.
