the food was very good except everything, even the guacomole, was so salty it was inedible.

corn and zucchini flower quesadilla was fantastic! we also really enjoyed the calamari. had our food at the ranstead room which was an equally wonderful experience. :)

this is for a series of posts for stephen starr restaurants including:alma de cuba, barclay prime, butcher and singer, continental midtown & martini bar, the dandelion, el rey, el vez, jones, parc, pizzeria stella, route 6 [1], route 6 [2], & square burger. one of our favorite places to get mexican food in philly is stephen starr's el vez. so it's no surprise that el vez's sister restaurant, el rey, offers similar tastes executed in prototypical starr fashion, along with a speakeasy in the form of the ranstead room out back.

i enjoyed a delicious mango margarita and the special for that evening "cecina tacos." the tacos were small in size and consisted of shaved beef topped with a picked slaw topped and cilantro. they packed a powerful punch of spice and we're definitely a dish i'd consider getting again.

while los catrines tequilas will always be my favorite mexican spot in philadelphia (i celebrated numerous birthdays there as a teenager), i’m always up for trying someplace new and in this instance, new was stephen starr’s el rey. (for anyone not familiar, stephen starr is one of the biggest names in philadelphia’s food and restaurant scene.) anyhow, el rey is located in the city’s center city neighborhood and serves up authentic mexican fare. it’s definitely a casual spot, but one with flair all the same.

stephen starr has been a major player in philadelphia’s dining scene since the 1990s, and recently brought his second mexican restaurant to the city: el rey . taking over an old, seedy diner location on chestnut street, just north of rittenhouse square, el rey retains much of the original funky atmosphere to create the feel of a mexican roadside dive. yet the food and drink at el rey is definitely a far step beyond average, featuring fresh ingredients and home-style mexican cuisine.

one of my favorite spots is el rey (2013 chestnut street) . twice when people have come to visit me from out of town, i've taken them here and they've all really thought it was a good choice - the pricey pitchers of sangria and traditional margaritas does make it a party! love the funky decor, a mix of 1950's diner, eclectic mexican, and a 1970's b movie house. the food is a little expensive for mexican, it's not one of those joints where you get a pile of food w/chips & salsa for $7.99. not sure they exists anywhere any more. el rey is mexican done stephen starr style, but it's super good! they've recently added a breakfast burrito you can order anytime of the day: scrambled eggs, avocado, rice, chihuahua cheese w/ choice of chorizo, bacon or black beans - 4 tines

it's changed my world. i'm a celiac and they have a dedicated gluten free menu. also, they are so knowledgeable about the restrictions, they even let you know which drinks have gluten in it (some triple sec is bad). it's delicious and safe!

drinks and decor much better than the food. the tamarind magaritas are awesome! the food was mediocre-got the chicken enchiladas and they were very bland.

go for lunch!. i met a friend here for lunch a few weeks ago, and the food is really tasty. el rey had a lunch special the day we went: a three course meal for a pretty reasonable price.

it wasn't packed but there was a decent crowd. still, the wait staff was very accommodating; i brought my son in a stroller and they never acted as if it was an issue or problem (which is significant as the restaurant's not in a huge space, and the stroller is not small).

i washed it down with a tasty margarita. i think i'd like to take my wife back with me to enjoy this tasty mexican mealopolis!

meh. the guacamole is where it's at, but i thought the portion sizes were small for the price/quality. not that the food was bad. it just wasn't great.

atmosphere rocks though!

after checking out some wackiness at carnivolution, i needed some vittles. we headed back towards center city and somehow ended up at el rey. i'd never heard of it
