we discovered this delightful, little restaurant by accident. we found the food to be quite authentic, and at a reasonable price. the salads, in particular, used very fresh ingredients and we found them to be among the best salads we have ever tasted in a restaurant. the friendly and fast service was also appreciated.

while the food was decent, the arrogant, rude, pushy waiter (manager?) was so awful, i will never go to this restaurant again. you have been warned!

referred here by a friend and we weren't disappointed. the flatbread with the honeycomb was to die for and the polenta with the ragu was delicious. the place was packed, but the waitress did a great job checking in with us and the food came out in a timely fashion-no long wait time. really enjoyed the vibe of this place and it was our first time in little italy in san diego.

easter is a meaningful holiday for me. i look forward to this particular friday and sunday each year. i was talking to my best friend munchkin (mk) and we both reflected how this can season can be about so many different heart breaks and heart mends ( be it faith, love, work, family, etc). i never celebrated easter with a big meal or a big brunch out. my family never did that. so, i thought i’d break this tradition last easter sunday by going to davanti enoteca del mar and sin it up there with their bloody mary bar. kidding aside, it was a last minute decision to try something new so i called a friend and we headed over to the del mar restaurant on a beautiful sunny easter afternoon.

s and i had a spontaneous date night a few weeks ago at davanti enoteca. there are a couple of locations in san diego, but the restaurant originated in chicago. knowing this, we were actually quite optimistic even though our experience with italian food in sd hasn’t been too impressive thus far.

one recent evening, laura and i went out for a girl’s night while jake was off working at comic con. we made an evening of by going to the amc theater in la jolla to sit in those fancy red recliners. i didn’t know it, but they have a 21+ area in the theater now where you can get your booze on while watching magic mike xxl or ant-man or something. we didn’t partake, though. i was too afraid to find out what the prices would be! after the movie (yes, we went to see magic mike, okay?!) we decided to have dinner in del mar and ended up going to davanti enoteca.

we've been here a couple times before, including san diego restaurant week and have enjoyed the food. they gave us this handy glossary guide when we were seated! i loved how it defined the unfamiliar words i've been seeing in italian restaurant names (davanti enoteca i.e. in front of the wine bar). while waiting for the rest of our party, dennis ordered the churchill downs cocktail. i couldn't resist ordering the polenta + ragu of the day in the large size for sharing. i absolutely love the creamy buttery polenta with its slight hint of cheese and the tender pork shoulder in umami sauce.

stingy pour; decent food. we went for happy hour. their pour was stingy but the food was good and reasonably priced, way ahead of jalapeno poppers and other crap one often sees at happy hour. the waitstaff seemed a bit inattentive but i'll give them the benefit the doubt for now and visit at least once more.
