it's fall, & that means brunswick stew!. t's fall and they're serving brunswick stew again, and this is pretty good stuff - actually better than most versions found in this part of the state. now, its not a strictly traditional version since it contains green peas and potatoes, in addition to the usual lima beans and corn. this stew is not as thick as some, is quite a bit lighter on the meat than previous years, but the flavor is very nice.
the sliced bbq here is very good, an excellent example of lexington style barbecue. the dipping sauce that the meat is in is a little on the sweet side and gets to be a bit much when eaten with the red, barbecue slaw which also has some sweetness. i dry the slices off and add their house bbq sauce which has some very nice heat.

their sliced lexington style bbq is best in the triad. the sliced barbecue at this location remains very, very good. the meat is very tender and moist, and is well sauced out of the kitchen, the additional sauce provided is a thicker red sauce than usually seen in this area - it carries some heat, and is nice on this pork.
the red "barbecue" slaw is nice and sharp here, and melds well with the barbecue, and the hush puppies which are round & crusty, are delicious.

try the sliced bbq here. tried their version of slice bbq recently, don't remember why i'd never done so before, but it was awesome - i will order it now, rather than the chopped. it is not as much sliced as it is coarse chopped (much like smiley's in lexington), and when you buy it by the pound, it comes with a nice amount of dipping sauce in the container.
you can just shred the chunks for a better fit on a sandwich, add some of their house hot sauce (a dark red sauce with both a little vinegar and some nice heat). best barbecue choice in the area, unless you get a whole shoulder from stamey's.
of course breakfast is nice (try the tenderloin biscuit), and when brunswick stew is on the menu, get it.

pretty good lexington style bbq. the bbq here is a pretty good version of lexington style pork barbecue, and i preferred the chopped pork here to that at the more renowned stamey's, primarily because of the texture (stamey's is minced, not chopped or pulled) and the moisture (stamey's can be dry). unlike stamey's the bbq here has no smokiness to it.
the pork is tender, moist, and well sauced with a mild lexington sauce. this pork, combined with the typical bbq slaw, makes a great sandwich, which is how i prefer the pork here. the sandwich is of the two-handed variety.
they also serve bbq chicken and ribs, both nice. i don't particularly like their hush puppies. they offer daily specials, which range from bbq combos, to meat loaf, to chicken tenders, to pork tenderloin - i'd stick with the bbq here, or the tenderloin. they have sandwiches, but the hot dog here is not a good one.
they also serve breakfast, and it is a good one - especially the "famous" tenderloin biscuit.
there is another location off nc hwy 68, near state street restaurant. the original location on fairfield rd in high point has recently changed hands and names.
