one of the best things about talking food with other food enthusiasts (apologies for using that term in overabundance, i just hate the term "foodie") is the resulting recommendations that come from discussing where you love to eat. there's a look in the eyes - a widening, a sparkle - that tells you all you need to know. i get that look about many, many things that i have eaten. after chicago, i couldn't talk about the food at chicago diner without getting a little misty eyed. i speak in similar ways about the taco stand at las palmas, the shakshuka at sababa middle eastern grill, the buffalo seitan wings at spak brothers. sylvia, from burgh bits and bites, had that look when she talked about the meles at colangelo's. the question, "ooh, what's a mele" nearly sent her teetering off her chair. meles, apparently, are one of the most delicious pastries invented by man, and colangelo's offers some of the best. "you must try it." i take recommendations fairly seriously, and when it's a real

colangelo's has good ingredients, but if you are ordering takeout, don't count on getting what you ordered. now, i don't say this out of haste. i've had two consecutive food orders messed up! if you'd followed my posts on the blog, you've seen that i tend

sfogliatelle: this pastry is one of my all time favorites. tasted just like back in jersey. just enough ricotta and citrus. this place is a gem.

unbelievable. i live in pittsburgh, but i play guitar in the band whitesnake, so i travel all over the world. i can honestly say it's the best food i have ever had in my life. the sausage is to die for. it's real italian food, cooked the same way as in italy. everything they make is the best you ever had in your life.

quick italian lunch in the strip. ever been in the strip district at lunch time and you're just tried of going to the street vendors? then colangelo's bakery is the place for you. here you can fill up on excellent italian entrees for a pittance. choose from pastries and pizza to soups and pasta entrees, add a beverage from la prima coffee (next door) and your meal is complete.
i chose a bowl of wedding soup and the polenta with tomato sauce and sausage. the wedding soup, topped with a generous helping of spinach, was excellent. it could have used some more of the tiny meatballs, but hey i like meatballs. the tomato sauce was perfectly spicy and the sausage hot with plenty of fennel.
my wife had the muffuletta. not quite as good as the central grocery in new orleans, but not bad. it could have used a little more meat and olive salad.
be prepared to eat standing up on tall tables. in warmer weather, there is limited seating outside.
overall a great change of pace, for a quick strip district lunch.

madonna..!!!. this place is almost like the one i used to go in nj... the food it's great and the portions very generous; eating there for lunch in a busy weekend it will be hard but try to go in the middle of the week. you will miss the old italians playing cards and their wifes sitting next to you and also the glamour of their way they talk and dress but... you will go home with a really big smile..!! =) by the way don't forget the coffee next door...at la prima.

fab food!. food is good, fresh, beautifully presented and reasonably priced. especially fond of the daily soups (porcini mushroom bisque is excellent!). grab a coffee from la prima next door and enjoy it along with colangelo's sfogliatelle or flaky apricot miele. the beans and greens are the city's best. note there are no chairs and only a couple of tables inside. (tables and chairs outside, but limited amount.) however, the food is worth standing elbow-to-elbow.

amazing food!. try the greens and beans with hot sausage, it's truly amazing. it can get a bit crowded during the lunch rush so be sure to come a little earlier in the morning if you're looking for a quick or relaxed meal. the outside seating is great, if you can find some! it's a very laid back spot so these outdoor seats can be occupied for hours at a time by lounging persons.
