best restaurant in athens area. because there was a 20 minute wait when we arrived, the hostess recommended that we wait at the bar. the bar was crowded but my wife was able to sit and i stood behind her. what a great crowd. it was like the old tv sitcom "cheers". we saw so many people there from athens. the selection of beer was great. i like dark beer while my wife enjoys a light beer. the bartender knew just what to recommend. we decided to order an appetizer - mussels at $8.50. great flavor, great price.
i am confident in saying that our dinner was the best we've had in the athens area. we frequent the five and ten, nona's and last resort. they have never delivered the quality of food, atmosphere and service that chops & hops delivered. this is going to be our new hang out for sure!

enjoyed it big time!. i've been to chops & hops twice now and i've had a wonderful experience both times. the atmosphere inside is nice yet casual.

the wait staff is very friendly and seem to be always on top of things. i was extremely impressed by the way they don't bother you while you're eating/talking, yet they are very attentive and know exactly when you need a refill or the next course, without being annoying.

the menu at chops & hops is a good combo of wonderful salads, sandwiches and steak/entrees. they do a great job of having something for everyone! my all time fav is the french dip sandwich. it is melt in your mouth fantastic! i even love how they bring out chips drizzled in cheese (i think) to munch on as soon as you sit down. i haven't had a steak dinner yet but am looking forward to trying it soon.

chops & hops is the perfect place to grab a beer after work and relax at the bar or on the patio, enjoy a business lunch or a chat with friends, and sit down to a nice dinner without having to head to athens.

stop by and give them a whirl. i sure thought it was worth the trip and i hope you do as well!

we love this place. we have a child attending uga so we often come up for a visit. someone recommended that we dine at chops & hops. we thought it was a great idea because we're not big fans of the parking situation in athens.
once we arrived, parking was easy. then we were greeted by a beautiful hostess with a beautiful smile. she promptly sat us and it was only moments before our server approached us. she was so personable and pleasant and was able to answer any and all questions we had about the menu. the meal was devine. our steaks were cooked to perfection. our wine was affordable and delicious.
mid meal, the owner came by our table to say hello. what a sweetheart. she genuinely cared if we enjoyed ourselves (which we did). we feel like we made an instant friend in her. very hospitable.
so, to sum things up......wow, we love this place.

my husband and i saw this little spot and thought we'd give it a shot and are really glad we did! this place is fantastic. great atmosphere and the food is delicious. the spicy chick pea soup was amazing! the french dip sandwich was the best we've had, and we've had a lot! we also had the wild and bleu burger. the addition of the peppered bacon along with the balsamic drizzle was a very delicious combination with the wild mushrooms and bleu cheese. we were in the area because of a volleyball game and will certainly be coming back just to visit this gem!

when our server suggested dessert, we looked at the dessert menu and were fixated on the funnel cake battered moon pie. we decided to share one among the four of us and it was light, fluffy and deelicious! it is exactly the way they described it. take a moon pie, dunk it in a funnel cake batter, fry it and then serve it with ice cream and a chocolate, raspberry and caramel drizzle and then watch four grown adults transform spoons into weapons of warfare. i don’t believe there is a superlative strong enough for the result. put this on your must try list when at chops & hops.

we’d been to the uga football game and we were tired and hungry when we got to chops & hops in watkinsville. first, no wise cracks about this tech fan going to a georgia football game. when you are married to a georgia grad, there’s such a thing as compromise. i reached into my husband’s bag of tricks and the only thing i could find was a “yes, dear”. we did have a lot of fun and we enjoyed the company of our friends. now, it was time to do what i came for – eat!

the restaurant was understandably crowded but its got great capacity and they were able to seat us right away. we soon had drinks (thankfully, because i was ready to fall out) and soon came the decision on what to order. since we’d been stomping around, what seemed to be all over athens, we were just beginning to recover from the heat and we didn’t want anything really heavy even though it was fast approaching dinner time.

i chose the wild & bleu burger and melanie went with the southern charm sandwich. we both ordered french fries but began the meal with a healthy house salad. it balances out, right? the house salad normally comes with a raspberry vinaigrette, but i went with the chipotle ranch dressing while melanie went with her regular ranch dressing. the chipotle had a mild kick so don’t be afraid of trying this unless you’re really just totally against anything spicy. the salads had a great green mix along with sundried cranberries, pecans and bleu cheese crumbles. they really hit the spot and were fresh and delicious.

i don’t really eat much red meat so it’s been a long time since i had a burger and the wild & bleu burger was really a treat. piled high with mushrooms, sprinkled with bleu cheese crumbles and some cooked-just-right thick bacon the wild & bleu was exactly what i was craving. the fries are seasoned with salt and pepper and were perfectly cooked.

melanie thought that her southern charm sandwich was also fantastic. she didn’t care for the thick bacon like i did. she would have preferred a thin, crispy bacon but i think that’s more of personal preference than anything else. the southern charm comes on sourdough bread and it’s basically a blt with pimento cheese. we’ve both been crazy for pimento cheese since our trip to phickles phun foods in athens, but nothing comes close to the awesomeness of their pimento cheese.

when our server suggested dessert, we looked at the dessert menu and were fixated on the funnel cake battered moon pie. we decided to share one among the four of us and it was light, fluffy and deelicious! it is exactly the way they described it. take a moon pie, dunk it in a funnel cake batter, fry it and then serve it with ice cream and a chocolate, raspberry and caramel drizzle and then watch four grown adults transform spoons into weapons of warfare. i don’t believe there is a superlative strong enough for the result. put this on your must try list when at chops & hops.

chops & hops was the perfect end to a long day of fun and football in athens. good food, super service and a to die for dessert are a winning combination. guten appetit!

good food and service. we ordered the crab cakes, ribeye, and seafood and grits. all tasted great. the food wasn't as hot (temperature wise) as we prefer. the server was super friendly and helpful. we spent $75 including the tip so the place is a little pricey.

we liked the food overall and the beer selection was very good so we thought we'd come back... until on the way out we noticed the health rating sign on the wall -- a 74 (out of 100), which is awful and unacceptable for a good restaurant.

love this place!. i've eaten many a lunch and a few dinners at this watkinsville restaurant and i have been pleased every time. if you are lucky enough to dine on a day that they offer the smoked gouda and mushroom soup...try it. i thought it was a simple pregnancy craving but it is over a year later and i admit i still call, from time to time, to find out the soups of the day, hoping that this is a chef's special. the tomato and basil soup is delicious as well. a variety of salads should satisfy all of the diners in your party. my husband enjoyed his steak at dinner (i loved the potatoes served under it) and i opted for the chicken. i really felt that it was comparable to a trendy athens area restaurant...the chicken was cooked perfectly, the risotto was creamy and flavorful, and the wild mushrooms & cream sauce took the dish to a higher flavor profile. the other hidden "gem" at this place, in my opinion, is the pimento cheese dip... it's hearty enough to share with the table as a starter, leftovers carry out well, and i love that there are enough warm, grilled pita triangles for all of the cheese, which is more of a spread than a dip. one of my pet peeves is restaurants that skimp on the bread or dippers. since our move here in 2011, i have sampled lots of pimento cheese delights in georgia. i believe this appetizer rivals any of those offered in the athens area... a bit of heat gives it a great kick and the crumbled bacon and green onion adds wonderful flavor. the complimentary chips drizzled with a creamy cheese and the great, friendly servers add to the dining experience.

best steak i have ever eaten!. i found this place on urbanspoon, and we went here for our one year anniversary. can i just say "amazing", the food was top notch! first, free chips came with our order, handcut and covered with an amazing sauce. we both had the 14oz ny strip with potatoes and asparagus. at first, they came out a little overcooked, but this was immediately rectified. the steak was juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. the asparagus was fresh, crisp, and cooked perfectly. the owner and chef came out to apologize for the delay in our entree (and honestly, with the atmosphere and the flavor of the food, we did not mind the wait). we also ordered dessert: the tequila key lime pie (amazing), and the fried moon pie (mind blowing). the service was also swift, friendly, and very on top of it. we are not wine buffs, and the server was able to recommend some great choices based on what we liked.

honestly, one of the best restaurant experiences of my life. i never want to go back to a chain steakhouse again! i am looking forward to going back soon to try the other things on the menu!
