four visits, none good. avoid. cherry, here is you're three tips "service, service, service"

so here we are my fourth trip to this restaurant. i had thought that since the rating at 85 % was so high, possibly i was wrong in my other 3 visits. but alas no i was not... which leads me to believe that the owner or employees are falsely submitting higher reviews to boister the rating for this restaurant. i have been too many restaurants that are rated this high. and they all deserve it but this one does not. they do not seem to learn from their mistakes. they seem to ignore everyone's review about it. and seem not to care that this self service atmosphere of this restaurant is killing it.

this could be a great restaurant with a few small changes. because the one good thing about this restaurant is the food is pretty good. but that is the only good thing. but they stubbornly stick with their "lack of service" format and that is everything.. in the breakfast/brunch market

btw maybe clean cutlery would be nice...

first of all the service. when you walk in the door you have to line up at the counter and order your food.it is at this point, when money changes hands that you tip. before you know what kind of service you will get. this counter service aspect others have complained about and continues to be a problem. we absolutely hate it. especially for the price. because of this, when the waitress bring her food she has no idea who ordered what dish so in our case she put down the wrong plate in front of the wrong people. and this was the owner. you are still forced to get your own cutlery napkins water condiments and refills. at $64 for 3 breakfasts this is terrible customer service. do not compare this restaurant with other bistro and breakfast restaurants such is the "the shine" ,"floyd's "and "john's". there is no comparison if you want your brunch place with service that is. there is a reason why there is no line up at the door for this place because it is not worth the money. if you make a note of the owners participation in this urban spoon blog. you'll know why i suspect that the rating for this restaurant has been falsely padded. my recommendation don't come here unless you're willing to serve yourself. don't expect the service you get another breakfast places because you're not going to get it. the owner claims there is a "learning curve and training" that cherry has complained is part of the problem has not improved in over a year. and it's not likely to improve because it would have been done by now.

[earlier reviews]
ok so i've eaten here three times now and my expectation was that it would be good based on the reviews. however i was disappointed each time. first is the self serve aspect where your expected to find your cutlery, jams, sugar etc from a two separate kiosks. secondly there seems to be a bit of an attitude with the counter staff., like they owe you a favour or something. that really needs to improve. thirdly the eggs benny almost always have a vinegary flavour which tells me the water they are poached in has too mich vinegar or the egg goes straight from the pot to the english muffin. apart from this the food is generally good and others i have gone with are mixed but mostly happy with the service. good idea to open sun. since you are mostly a brunch place and sun morn is brunch time. myself, i will not return and that is a shame since i live just down the street.

food good, atmosphere pleasant. with the exception of a couple of snappish responses while ordering at the counter, the experience was very good. each of the eight people in our group had a different dish, and almost all were impressed. the eggs bennie were tasty, the french toast was cooked just right (although it was found to be too large a portion, not necessarily a bad thing), the mennonite sausage and corned beef hash were declared very good, and the bacon and eggs with the fried yam mixture (yam, onion, peppers) were delicious and cooked just right. the omelet looked very generous, and was good. the blueberry buttermilk pancakes were tasty, and were completely polished off. the breakfast sandwich was also demolished, although the egg in it was not runny as ordered. the only questionable item was the blintzes -- the cottage cheese was thought to be a little off, but it was mostly eaten. the coffee was very good, and the mighty leaf teas are the best. the system of ordering at the counter feels a little awkward, and it seems that each table needs to be told about it, along with the specials. perhaps a prominent note on the menus as well as clearer signs would be helpful. also, many of us missed picking up our cutlery on our way back to the table after ordering -- perhaps it should be a little more obvious, say beside the order counter. all in all, it was an excellent choice for breakfast for a group. everyone found something they liked on the menu, and it wasn't too noisy for conversation across the table for the whole group. we would go again.

p.s.. i have a feeling that the "negative" reviews posted here are from competitors who can't match cherrie's quality!!!

perfect pancakes. my wife and i needed a place to go while our cat had an ultrasound procedure. the vet clinic receptionist recommended the breakfast bistro.

we had the best pancakes of our lives. cherrie (the owner) was an absolute delight. the atmosphere is "funky chic" and very clean. you need to try this place!

surprise!. took my bride of 39 years to a valentines brunch after hearing/reading the place was in a mall, the portions were small, they weren't open sunday so i don't like them.i hesistate to tell the truth because i might not get a seat next time we go there. cafeteria style ordering so you can speak to the person making your meal! wife had eggs and menninite sausage and i ordered eggs benny. first blush you think you may walk away hungry but i had a tough time finnishing the benny - eggs done perfectly with fresh grilled wedge hash browns with a wonderful light dusting of spice and shaved almonds. fresh hashbrowns! i was hard pressed to finnish my plate and liked the fact i was paying about two dollars less based on market price for a benny but i wasn't sending 1/3 of an overserved plate back to the kitchen and i was full. my wife tried to make it through her breakfast but left behind one piece of the great home made bread. the whole staff genuinely appreciated our business an feedback. the fact they close on sunday is fine with me.we all need time with our families and we will support cherries going forward do they can continue to serve great food and enjoy life. thank you. rob

closed on sundays--what? do they really get that much business on weekdays? how about hiring staff to keep the place open? really disappointed...

tasty food and good value!. we tried this new restaurant today as it had opened up in our neighbourhood. at first glance, it looks like a coffee shop, but it is actually a restaurant that extends quite deep into the back with lots of seating.

when you walk in, there's no indication of what one should do--seat yourself or wait for a server. i walked up to the counter, and you are supposed to order at the counter and then seat yourself. the server delivers the food to your table, but you need to collect your own cutlery. we ordered a florentine eggs benny ($12.95, i think) and a slice of breakfast pizza ($4.50) with a cappucino and latte. the bill came to $25 and some change-- quite a reasonable price in this town!

the breakfast pizza was a refreshing twist on the usual scrambled eggs and sausage. a thin crust was slathered in hollandaise sauce and then topped with egg, sausage, tomato and spinach. quite delicious! the eggs for the eggs benny were poached to perfection. the hollandaise sauce was also really, really good. it hadn't been sitting around in a container thickening, and it had a nice, lemony edge to it. the wedge style hashbrowns were also very tasty. i assume it was the owner who was making rounds within the restaurant offering customers samples of a new waffle they were thinking of adding to the menu.

all in all, i think i will be back to this place for the food. it was a bit disorganized between the ordering and the paying. the cashier was very poor--she needed us to repeat our order several times before getting it right. she also did not greet us or tell us about any menu items (something i would expect from a new restaurant). the menu system also needs fixing. it is very difficult for more than one person at a time to read the menu, as they are just print outs on the counter. paying was also weird...we had to wait in line while other newbies placed their order with the slow cashier. i think you should have to pay at the time you order or else there should be 2 separate cashiers--i can't imagine what would happen if this place got really busy. that cashier just wouldn't be able to cope.

the decor of the restaurant is also unusual. it's having an identity crisis, i think. there are the leather high back chairs in dark brown, white, and orange along with club chairs. however, there was jamaican music in the background, and the art on the wall looked very himalayan-esque. whatever! it will come into its own in time.

the food was great--go for it. you won't be disappointed if that's their usual quality.

i have been there twice now and both times i left still hungry and very disappointed. the first time i went my french toast was great, but small portion. potatos were very undercooked. i didn't eat any more than one bite. second time, my coffee took 15 minutes till the staff realize the reason i was staring at them wasnt because i too was interested in how much they drank last night. after bringing you your food they proceed to tell you where to find the self serve cutlery, jams and napkins. very disappointed, the 4 of us will never return.

great coffee, well-executed food. i just finished my fourth visit to cherries breakfast bistro over the past 4 months and am quite happy. this is an order and pay at the cashier, pick up your coffee, and they deliver your food experience so i think the "bistro" in their name applies quite well.

the espresso is excellent, serving caffe umbria beans and the baristas are competent at pulling shots.

the mennonite sausage is excellent and the bennies are well prepared. the hollandaise contains a little more lemon juice than other places around town, so has a bit of a zing to it. the buttermilk pancakes are thick and dense, not fluffy. this is not a bad thing, just a little different. more importantly, they are made from scratch. i didn't care for the beef burger patty as it seemed to have been blended with other ingredients as it was soft. i prefer my burger patties to only contain beef.

we have had some food come out cold and the pancakes chewy when it was busy. i'll attribute that to being a new restaurant as i haven't been there during a busy time again. the portions are filling, but not excessive and the price point is reasonable with bennies costing under $12. it's nice to have a good breakfast option that isn't downtown.

a great place!. i loved coming across this refreshing place! the area has gained a much needed local, tasteful, comfortable, casual, beautiful, fun and funky bistro with a great menu. the mennonite sausage is particularly authentic and tasty - super smokey and delicious. the hollandaise sauce was what i have been looking for all over town - buttery smooth and flavour rich. great place for coffee or a full brunch, with a group or alone. i will stop here again on my way back from hiking and biking out in west saanich - perfect combination of ambience and a well crafted menu full of really good food. love it and am relieved to find a place like it in the neighbourhood.

look no further...eat here!. you will not be disappointed! just walk up to the counter and pick up a menu. i strongly suggest sitting down somewhere and reading it thoroughly as you try and narrow down what you would like. the description of the meals makes them sound so enticing that it is difficult to choose. but they do not just sound good.....they are fabulous to eat too!
it is like the food your grandmother would make, you know, the sauces that have that extra something spice that adds just that little bit of "zing" to the meal.
don't forget to take your piece of plastic fruit back to your table once you have paid for your meal. but if you just want a coffee and muffin you will not be disappointed there either. try an americano or a latte and i know you will be back for more.
enjoy!!!
we certainly do!

absolutely fantastic. food was fresh, potatoes were homemade. little details like pecans made our breakfast one of the best weve had in victoria. the sausage was delicious. atmosphere was friendly and laid back. highly recommended! if you like your breakfast homemade with no frozen foods, cheap bread, or made from mixes, this is the place to go.

what a hidden treasure. took a friend here for a birthday brunch and mentioned it to the owner who went beyond what was necessary to make it memorable. the service, decor, atmosphere and food was all good. so many options on the menu convince you to return. the word is out on cherries breakfast bistro, go and enjoy!
