best island-hopping and beach-combing fare!. the castaway is the closest thing you’ll come to in the keys to be in the feel of island-hopping and beach-combing fare! the place is whoppingly huge! there isn’t a nook or cranny that hasn’t a fish, sea, boat or crustacean nik-nak to be gawked at! it is truly a maze of a restaurant. you’ll feel like you’ve entered a cross between gilligan’s island meets pirates of the caribbean, or mutiny on the bounty vs. waterworld! there’s almost anything and everything you can imagine sea-related in this place... from live fish to fish nets – along with boats on its dock! we enjoyed one of our most pleasant meals here. the staff all were wearing smiles and legitimately happy to see and serve us. don’t get me wrong, and don’t mistake my description with that of the likes of a rainforest café – it’s not, this place was great on so many levels. the food was outstanding, the drinks were very, very good and not watered down, the seating was comfortable, the lighting and ambience was ideal and overall makes you feel the caribbean experience head on! our meal consisted of refreshing fat tire beers, sierra mists and mojitos, then pigged out with edamame; ( clams casino – some of the best i’ve had in a long, long time; a terrific fried shrimp dinner with boiled potato; their special sashimi dinner; an incredibly perfectly prepared snapper mazatlan with white rice started with a caesar salad; the fish of the day was super fresh and tender; and then i stole some of my sis’ tuna entrée grilled rare with fries. overall, everyone at the table agreed, this had been the best dinner we experienced while staying at the lower keys.
