a group of us went for a meal last night. we had to be reseated as they had our group number wrong and what followed was a whole palaver with the waitress about the configuration of the seating at our new table. her whole attitude was very unprofessional and to be honest we couldn't believe the arrogance.
the initial service was certainly lacking but it did improve with a different waitress. the food was beautiful and well presented but such a shame some of the wait staff soured our experience. after reading previous reviews i seriously can't believe that this hasn't been addressed.

went last thurs for dinner with 3 other girlfriends me being the 4th. we were greeted nicely and accommodated fast. a must try from their menu is the t-bone steak paired with creamy mashed potato. wait staff are very attentive they take our plates once done getting ready for the next . to sum it all, we ordered 2 starters, 2 mains one of which is a steak, a cocktail, creamy spinach and 2 deserts. we will definitely come back, worth paying the price.

had a pretty big business dinner at the carlton during the week, maybe 15-16 ppl. we had the shared platters to start, a mix of the meat and fish options. wasnt very impressed by the fish platter but the meat option was tasty. i had the rib eye for main with the blue cheese butter, was a very tasty steak.
giving 3 stars which i feel is a little harsh as the food was defo four stars but the service was a little poor. the waitress had too much to cover and she was under pressure. we made the booking well in advance and i feel they should have factored this into the roster. still, no one complained about their steaks.

very kind reservation phone call and kindly employee. very taste food. perfect t born steak and smooth cream today’s pasta. and big pork lips and potato’s so tasty. but best is steak.

we called in last minute to make a booking and there was availability ! the restaurant was pretty busy on a friday. we orders the ribs and the buffalo chicken which we're both full of flavour and yum! we were looking out for the $25 dinner mains but it looks like they have taken this away . either way we are happy to pay for good food and good service!

received very poor service from the staff everytime i have visited the carlton and i don't appriciate the rudeness of the staff and their lack of respect of their patrons

great place to chow down on a truly superb aged premium cut of steak. expensive yes but worth it for that "what the hell" boys night out. great atmosphere and service. one of the few times i've been out and the drink service kept up with the tables needs. thanks guys.

i always enjoy my visits to this bar. their platters are amazing. great value for the price. big variety of wines. lovely staff. and a beautiful decor of the place! highly recommend 👍

had a lovely lunch date with few people around the place which was great. no drunkies, no people yelling and no endless waiting for food. the music was loud still. we had the seafood platter. it was such a decent portion i was actually packed.

the dippings were really good. nothing went wrong on the platter. i was just wondering where the fruits were as stated in the menu. but not a big deal, the food was pleasant. i enjoyed the creamy oysters most. and the salmon fins probably the second. btw i really like the riesling i had.

always at his place as there is great music and friendly staff. the pork crackling and duck fat potatoes are amazing! i have also had a steak and pork belly, both were delicious.

having a few drinks at the bar saturday night, we we're hungry so decided to order some food, picked "from the sea, platter".  when it was delivered we all commented that there seemed to be not a great deal of " from the sea" on he platter. when we were nearly finished the bar manager came over and insisted that the platter board was taken away, we had to load the remaining food into a bowl so the precious platter board could be presumably be used elsewhere. for $85 i would expect that the board would be left on the table until we, the customers, were finished eating the food we had paid for and would not have to manually load it into a bowl. after they left i looked again at the bar menu. the "from the sea" platter was said to contain oysters, salmon, soft shell crab - none of these were on the platter and the only item of sea food we received that was listed on the menu were mussels.  i complained to the waitress who said they were sorry but some things were out of season and they must have run out of the others, soft shell crab was replaced with morton bay bugs and there was a battered fish type item on the platter but none of us could identify what it actually was. i asked for a refund and was offered a round of drinks, i said that this was not proportionate and wanted to speak to the manager only to be told he was busy upstairs, i suggested she go and fetch him. he did appear at the bar and for the first time that night i could see him serving drinks, again the waitress came over and now said that she was acting as the manager. i said it was totally inappropriate to serve a platter that has no resemblance to what is written on the menu. she said it was too hard to change the menus each season - she needs to go to any food establishment dealing with seasonal food, this is par for the territory, if you can't cope with seasonal don't go there. she was abrupt and rude with little concept of customer service and said that there was nothing she could do.  the customer is always right mr carlton, especially when you are wrong and are charging $85 for a platter that simply is not what your menu specifies. the waitress continued her brick wall approach to customer service so in anger and frustration i told her to get f'ed. a few minutes later the brave and busy manager approached and asked to talk to me outside, he told me that it was not acceptable to speak to his staff that way. i started to explain that their menu misrepresented what was actually served and his professional response was - goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.... 
a fantastic solution, throw out someone who complains that what they ordered was not what they got. my response to the waitress who suddenly became the manager may not have been appropriate but nor is having a menu that does not represent what you deliver. yes we should have noticed the platter was not as the menus stated when it was delivered but why should we have to check and why are they still charging full price for a substitute platter that is inferior.
small point here mr carlton - your mistake, total lack of customer service to correct the situation, throw out the complainant when they get pissed off with your stonewall approach. i am looking forward to not going back to this underrated establishment with music from the 80's, a covers band that needs to go back to the 80's and a manager who is out of his depths big time.
if you want a decent platter and surroundings no4 in merrivale is the place to go, no bullshit there.

took my friend there for late dinner. i have to say their green lipped mussels are the best i have tried in christchurch so far. i don't eat beef, therefore i have no comment on steak meal. according to my friend, she loves steak very much.

i have been here a few times now and all have been a good experience. tonight was the crispy skin fish and it was very nice. a nicely cooked fillet and very crispy skin. the peppers, olives, etc went very well with the overall taste and the potatoes were very nice. i didn't manage to get in the main restaurant area but was quite comfortable as long as you didn't mind louder background music. all live and good. staff were very good and it is very nice when they recognise return guests.

overall a very good evening on a
monday.

i was looking forward to going to the carlton bar even though i knew it was a little on the pricey side... i loved where they seated us...and that was about it...ordered steak... was surprised we had to buy the veges... what happened to healthy??? vegetables should be with every meal....steak was small and cooked how i liked it... sauce had cinnamon in it.... not the one i ordered but had poured it over my steak... cinnamon and steak is not a combination i like... pork belly was yummy, my dad had that, scallops were good too... my daughter just had the potato, they didn't put any extra on the plate, that was her main meal... two squares would have been good as they are not big.... she is 13, not 3... then the waiter comes out and tells us that its a $25 surcharge to have the birthday cake i made... hmmmm no cream, ice cream, berries or anything for that, just plates! can't tell me they had to employ someone extra to wash those nine plates??? i could not believe it... we ordered some dessert... choc tart was great, the rest was awful... the tasting plate was terrible, the lemon tart was runny but the base was hard as rock.... luckily we had my cake which was delicious.... bill was very expensive, i thought the waiter was a bit obnoxious, though i liked him in the beginning... i think he thought we never went out to dinner and were a bit hill billy ish... i go out all the time for dinner and that was one of the worst places i have ever been....and won't be eating there again... i will be going to the bar, because it's a good bar with a good age group mix.

great steak, good service, nice atmosphere.
a bit pricey once you order your steak, add vegetables/salad, sauces etc. but certainly worth it.
one problem was car parking, not a lot around there, all tow away areas or park 60 minutes.
