absolutely superb. we have eaten at caprice bistro 6 times since moving to the general area 1½ years ago (1 35 mile trip from our home). food is wonderful, great wine list, excellent service and enticing specials. have had 24 neighbors in to try their appetizers in their lounge upstairs, and everyone, to a person, thorougly enjoyed the fare and plans to return. if you have only one night in wilmington, eat at caprice bistro

$5 mussels on tuesday!. i haven't had a bad meal here yet. i really enjoy their mussel special on tuesdays for $5, it is enough for a meal. my favorites are the mussels bruxelles. they have five different varieties of sauces you can get your mussels cooked in and with a side of pomme frites it makes for a nice inexpensive dinner.

dinner date at caprice, weds. night-. the hostess warmly received us, offering the window table on their banquette as we arrived. it was 6pm and we enjoyed a marvelous living theater of the street outside, watching downtowners walking dogs, moving from desk to bar, jogging, or riding the horse-drawn carriage for a tour (probably the finest window in downtown wilmington). my wife was beautiful and happy, reviewing the menu and sipping a mohito, freshly muddled mint wafting across the table. our lively waiter explained the specials, cracked a coupl'a jokes, and we ordered the first course: spinach salad and curried mussels. mussels are something of a culinary religion in the bistro menu, and man does caprice nail them! yellow curry pushed and pulled the mussels like a spirited dance partner, allowing the mussels their own flavors, then enhancing them. the spinach salad was good, the fresh leaves like crisped butter pushing lightly bitter notes against a very good roquefort cheese and sweetened walnuts.

for the entrée, my wife had the plat du jour-lapin au moutarde. the rabbit was perfectly prepared, and a hint of smoky pork-salt extracted the nuanced flavors of the meat. the mustard notes were pleasantly subtle, infused with a buttery white wine. the sauce coated a fresh fettucine, perfectly al dente and flavorful in itself.
i had the bistro steak. pomme frites arrived with the teres major steak, seasoned and grilled and served with a bordelaise reduction. pink and tender on the inside while nicely charred on the outside, the beef was amazing. the baked, herbed tomato and sauteed carrots were also delicious, that innate sweetness working the meat's earthier elements.

dessert was a simple, traditional faire (by choice)-my wife ordered the crème brulee, vanilla, with the crisp skin of the caramelized sugar cracking nicely beneath the spoon. my choice was also delicious, (though i caught some jokes for the simplicity of my dessert palette)the eternal "dame blanche." while vanilla ice cream is timeless and not very exciting, add the chef's belgian chocolate and freshly whipped cream (amazing!) and voila-a beautiful dessert. a cup of dark coffee, procured from a regional coffee roaster, poured dark and deep to make the meal a fine success.

while my palette may be less advanced in some selections, the fundamentals of cooking are well-represented and are, infact, feted at caprice bistro. even a basic selection, whether beef or vanilla ice cream or coffee, becomes a multilayered, intricate flavor-map of culinary traditions of the french bistro.

highly recommended!!

amazing meal on bastille day!. to celebrate bastille day i indulged myself in the $25 prix fixe menu. i choose frog legs...fried perfectly- nice and crispy, coq au vin..truly amazing...chicken with a rich flavor of wine and lardons, and for dessert an ice cream filled crepe with drizzled chocolate and strawberry sauce..wow. i would have to rank this meal as one of my top favorites meals i've ever had in the wilmington area. well done, chef!

i don't go nearly as much as i'd like.... caprice is one of wilmington's dining gems. excellent food, excellent staff, kind owners who truly care about their customers. they have a nice atmosphere, i'm a big fan of the upstairs sofa bar, very cool. they have a rotating art display of local artist's work, adds a nice touch to the ambiance.

they have a great special in the sofa bar sunday-friday from 5-7pm. all the bar food is $5. kobe beef burgers, calamari, mussels in a curry cream sauce, all of which i've had and all are excellent. the waterzooi on the dinner menu is spectacular as well. i believe on thursdays during the 5-7 time frame they have $5 martini's as well.

this is making me drool as i write. definitely check it out.

loved the food!. on a recent trip to wilmington, i probably had my best meal at caprice bistro. the service was just so-so, but the food was to die for! i had a seared fish fillet with lemon, capers and parsley and my husband tried pate for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. they have daily specials that includes a prix fixe menu and a large wine selection that can be ordered by the glass or bottle. one thing to remember, this is a french restaurant and a lot of the menu has french wording. the descriptions are in english so you will know what you are ordering. i can't wait to go back!

french/belgian comfort food. this was our second visit to caprice and it was just as enjoyable as the first. it was a sunday evening this time, which allowed us to enjoy a half price bottle of wine (wines marked with 2 stars are half price on sunday.) while it was not a wine to wow me, it was a nice compliment to the meal. my husband and his mother both had the special trigger fish with risotto. it was a nice size portion and even with the risotto, a little lighter than most of the choices. i had the endive salad and a mushroom crepe. the salad was a nice departure from most salads; crisp boats of belgian endive with goat cheese, candied walnuts, and beet dressing. the crepe was warm and homey, but still somewhat light. the other person joining us had the duck confit (a bit heavy, but always fabulous.) if i had one complaint about this restaurant, it would be that i would wish for lighter choices in the heat of summer, so that we could go more often.

love this place!. my boyfriend and i went just last night. i had french onion soup as a starter, he had their pommes frites. first of all, tons of onions in the onion soup, which was great. the fries are served with a homemade mayonnaise with a bit of spice, that i love, and i don't usually like mayonnaise. they have awesome bread, also. for the entree, i had the special - grouper bearnaise. it was amazing. it was served on a bed of cheesy risotto with skinny green beans, limas, cubes of sweet potato, and a broiled tomato. everything tasted very fresh and light. my boyfriend had the mahi-mahi. i can't remember what it was called, but it was also fantastic. we finished dinner with their belgian chocolate cake. it was very rich and very satisfying.

i highly recommend this restaurant. when you go in, ask for michael as your waiter. if he is unavailable, ask for lee.

true belgian cuisine. ah, where to start?!? how about escargot bathed in a lusicious roquefort cream sauce that, i swear to god, haunt me. a solid steak, the best strip you've had in a while done simply. and if you don't eat their trademark fries well then you are a fool and have missed the best gem of downtown. i prefer to sit at the bar, a magical nook and catch up on news and good wine. lately i've been just getting three or so apps just to gnosh out, and try different stuff. that's how i found the veal cheeks and knew true happiness..don't say i didn't warn you!
