how excellent food turns horrible (a failed italian love affair). we have probably all had it at one time or another: a restaurant we have been told the high praises of and would like to enjoy a meal at. how once we are there, we are handed the linen napkin on a beautifully appointed table in a nice setting with plenty of light. how the menu isn’t complicated and the choices are well described... until the server takes over and things start to go downhill!
i was today at caffe torino on 10325 north la cañada drive in oro valley for lunch with four of my co-workers. we go out to eat to escape the stress of the office and hope to get something good in return for our choice to support a local business. there is no denying that the cook at caffe torino knows his stuff! whether eggplant parmiggiana or tilapia with lemon butter and capers, the food is good... until the server takes over and things start to go downhill!
the quality of the service was poor and the manners of your on-site manager were dreadful. the simple facts are:
1. i asked for a glass of cold water without ice: i received plain tap water at room temperature.
2. the two of us that ordered the main meal plate, which comes with complementary warm bread, never received it.
3. the usual complementary offer of a little bit of parmesan over the meal never materialized.
4. between the plates arriving at the table and the check arriving at the table the server never came back to the table to ask if anything was needed.
5. when i commented to the manager that the service at the table was poor, she became argumentative.
6. when i told her that i would not leave a tip, which as a customer i believe is my privilege, i was told: it doesn't matter. you never tip anyway!
any customer should expect a minimum of good service at the table. additionally, the manager should be polite enough to listen to comments about the service, as they are intended as feedback to help better the experience at the restaurant. finally to be confronted not only with a hostile attitude but to be told by said manager that she is keeping tabs on how i exercise my privilege as a customer to tip or withhold tiping is downright unacceptable. this is an example on how excellent food can turn bitter in one’s mouth and feel horrible.
this restaurant deserves a wide berth. i am sorry for the cooks who labor so hard to have their work undone by such horrible service.
