cafe on the square

the girl was rude to me from the minute i sat down. i asked her twice to refill my water glass,she ignored me. 30 minutes after i'd placed my order she came over and told me she had thrown my order in the trash and wanted to know if i still felt like eating. busy day for me so i left without eating. in the area for awhile for work,so i may go back but if i do i'll be sure to not use the same waitress.

very good breakfast. the building is very old and has a very dank feel. im pretty sure the chairs were recycled from old cafeteria chairs. im ok with both of those things. good quick service.

the food is pretty hit-or-miss. the biggest annoyance every time i go in is the "smoking section" in the back. the restaurant is a single, large, hall-type room with several ceiling fans. there is no way to isolate a smoking section.

much larger menu. the menu on urbanspoon only shows one page of an approximate six page menu so don't think this is all they have they have much more very good food very good service

we had. breakfast tacos and the portions were fulfilling, very generous portions waitress was a go getter n her service was great. food was good not great. nothing to write home about. all n all i would eat here again

breakfast. stopped here for breakfast on 9/29/13. it was my first time there and they were crazy busy which i totally understood since it was parents weekend. we only had to wait 10 minutes to get seated and about 10 to get waited on for our coffee and milk. another 20 went by before our order was taken and then another 25 went by before i was told they were out of what i had ordered. i changed my order and 30 minutes later we were finally served. people that were seated after us had already been fed and were checking out. we ordered pancakes, french toast, bacon, sausage and eggs. none of it was good. not even the coffee. eggs overcooked, bacon and sausage undercooked. pancakes and french toast dry and tasteless. not worth the $18 tab before tip.

fairly average. close to the college campus so i think expectations after a night at the bar are fairly low.

chimi-what!?!?!?!?. i ordered a chimichanga, i specifically asked that it be cooked a little longer than normal, because i like them a bit crispy. i am by no means a critic, but this was by far the worst mexican-style food i have ever had the displeasure of consuming. what i received was a very soggy, grease soaked burrito with what was obviously gravy from a jar. the service was marginal, don't plan on getting a refill, even if its the unsweetened tea. (sweet is not available) the french fries i substituted for the salad were not crispy, and it was apparent they were undercooked. i'm sure something they have is good but unfortunately i wont be back.

the food is delicious! every time. but the smoke is overwhelming at times and service is usually slow. but it's worth it.

not really good or bad. i've been living in san marcos for years and always passed this place by because my friends have always told me to avoid it. i decided to try it with my roommate anyway. since it has that "diner" look from the outside, i was really hoping for some homey, comfort food. it was around lunch time, so it seemed pretty busy. the menu items were very run-of-the-mill, which was a bit disappointing. there wasn't one thing on the menu that i could say i have seen at a dozen other restaurants. there really isn't anything particularly unique or interesting about the decor, the menu, or anything else about this restaurant.

it took me about fifteen minutes to figure out what i wanted to order, because nothing on the menu stood out to me. our food was all right, and the onion rings that came with my philly cheesesteak were obviously from a frozen bag. it's slightly irritating to me when i pay for food that i could have easily made myself from fresh ingredients, and made much better.

our server was very sweet, though. she was very consistent in refilling my coffee and checking in on us, so i give the service a thumbs up (especially considering how busy it was).

not awful, but not great, either. not a place i'll be visiting again any time soon, not when there are so many other amazing restaurants within walking distance.

avoid like the plague on sunday mornings after 10 am. the service goes downhill, also the back portion is smoking. food quality wasn't really that great and the coffee was weak and lacked flavor

horrible breakfast. i've eaten here before and can recommend the patty melt and grilled chicken sandwich. yesterday, sunday, i craved a good breakfast and ordered an omelet, hashbrowns, and a side of gravy. the omelet was tasteless and the hashbrowns overcooked and left under the warmer way too long. the gravy was watery and the biscuit old. never again.

breakfast was good. had omlet, pancake & hashbrowns. service was good, restaurant was full, waitress was friendly & efficient. will go back again.

if this is the best or favorite of san marcos then the rest of the restaurants must be horrible. if you like frozen chicken fried steak and flavorless food then this is the place for you, otherwise, find somewhere else to eat!

will go back!. the salad dressing was so good, i got some to go. i'm not normally fond of chicken fried steak, but it was so good that i ate the whole thing. we didn't have room for dessert, but ate the entire piece of pie.
