just hope that dave marshall is not at the desk. my daughter had made reservations for 4 and called to
confirm the day before. this man was a total jerk. he talked down to her and went on and on about how she had said 2! what was the big deal?!!! there were several tables available. just the rudeness of it all...set a very bad tone for us as diners. food was pretty good. wait staff was slow. not sure we'll go back...too many other choices available in that area.

food spa. my husband and i have lived in fort worth for eight years and discovered cafe modern early on; it quickly became a favorite for special occasion or romantic dinners. (my husband found the lobster to be the best he'd ever had when it was a menu choice for a valentine's dinner.) we also often meet here for a fast lunch date when my husband's work schedule gets hectic. the area is beautiful and relaxing, we never have to wait for a table, and the service is always efficient and superb. chef dana has been recognized for her commitment and creativity in using locally produced ingredients. my favorite is the morrocan chicken salad while my husband usually chooses whatever fish is in season. the contrast of fresh, crisp romaine, breaded cold chicken, and a tart lemon vinaigrette make the morrocan chicken salad amazingly delicious. (this dish is especially refreshing on scorching texas days.) the desserts rotate a bit, which can be frustrating if you crave a particular treat. the coffee is fantastic and i always have second cup. my only complaint is that the iced tea could be improved upon; i have found it to be rather weak and prefer water when dining here. recently, when i was having a "me" day, i decided to treat myself to lunch at cafe modern. when i mentioned this to the staff, they went out of their way to make sure i had even more wonderful service than usual, pampering me without crowding me. bravo!

we went for sunday brunch and really enjoyed it. it is a little pricey, but the atmosphere and view are beautiful and you can walk around the museum for free after since admission is free on sunday.
the coffee was really good and my husband liked his bloody mary.
i had the grilled cheese and it was very rich and decadent. my husband had the "lax" and bagels and liked it... although he still claims einstein bros has the best lox & bagels for the price.
we also shared the peaches & cream desert which was fantastic.
our server was kind and attentive. we went at 10am when they open and by the time we left it was starting to fill up a bit. i can see how going later than we did might cause things to run more slowly. but, 10am was a great time to go.
we will be back and will likely be trying their dinner for a special occassion.

sunday brunch. location and view - spectacular. service - harried, (i would not work there - too many snoots), and slow. food - not up to hype or price. select carefully from the menu but you just can't beat the dramatic background for a light snack or drinks. go at least once.

dallas / fort worth area is a nice tourist destination. plenty of texan restaurants and some pretty modern ones: 1. cafe modern (inside the modern art museum) : what to order --- chicken sandwich with arugula, fire-roasted tomatoes on focaccia, blue-cheese, horseradish sauce, yellow watermelon, cucumber spear; caprese steak salad (shoulder steak, balsamic reduction, garlic, cherry tomatoes, and mini fresh mozzarella balls). the view is pretty: in front of a reflecting pool!!! chicken sandwich with arugula, fire-roasted tomatoes on focaccia caprese steak shoulder salad 2. stephan pyles : what to order --- lock duart salmon with black-bean-roast banana mash, coconut-serrano broth and mango-tortilla salsa; herbed ricotta stuffed roast natural chicken with oaxacan mashed potatoes and caramelized onion-chipotle broth; dessert: mexican chocolate kahlua!!! this is my favorite restaurant in dallas :) loch duart salmon herbed ricotta stuffed roast natural chicken 3. bijoux : what

great ambience, interesting food, uneven service. it is worth extending a stay in the cultural district to stop by cafe modern, if just for a glass of wine. the cooly sparse decor and the restaurant's elliptical shape make it appear to float over tadao ando's sparkling lagoon... a very pleasant place to rest on a simmering summer day. the seasonally changing menu is inventive, featuring locally sourced ingredients with various ethnic influences. the moroccan chicken salad is a standout, as is a mushroom risotto which appears on the menu in colder months. i was recently very pleased with the curiously named beet "carpaccio," actually a sliced yellow and red beet salad garnished with microgreens, local chevre, pistachios and citrus vinaigrette. the restaurant has an excellent list of wines by the glass. once a moderately priced restaurant, cafe modern has gotten a bit costly, and the price increases should have come with improved service. at a restaurant of this caliber, i expect professional waitstaff, yet on multiple visits, the service has been very slow and waiters appeared to be untrained college kids. their communication skills are poor, and waitstaff often confuses orders. i've found that the best meal service consistently comes from the always busy bartender at the tiny bar in the back of the dining room.

self date. if i said art was what brought me to the modern on a warm friday afternoon, i would be lying, not that the pieces i saw weren't astetically pleasing. no, i came for a self date to one of "america's best restaurants". both curious and eager to see how cafe modern measured up to the other scrumptious culinary adventures i've had i headed to the modern. turning the corner into cafe modern was in one word, stunning. the tedious care put into everything from the knifes standing in an upward position to the no door airy approach was all in some kind of modern feng shui sync. which when you think about it all makes perfect sense and flowed as an extended piece from the gallery. i was graciously sat at a small table right by the window, the view alone kept me company while i waited for yet another adventure to begin. i was greetly by two servers and ordered a glass of merlot and a house salad while i mulled over the entree options, which didn't make much sense since i've had the menu memorized since monday.
when my wine returned i asked for the servers opinion and since everything looked amazing decided on her suggestion, the grilled copper river salmon.
my salad arrived and i took fork and knife in hand with a smile. the salad was plain, but in a complex way, which complemented what was to come. field greens with grape tomatos, and grana padano on the side drizzled with olive oil and wonderfully fresh lemon juice. a basket of assorted breads came with the salad, and those were enjoyable but aren't all little breads that come with light whipped butter. after the salad i enjoyed my wine, the music and overall vibe of the restaurant while i waited for the entree.
when my salmon arrived, my eyes couldn't help but gorge themselves on the array of textures and bright colors, and the whole fried okras crowning the grilled salmon. after i took in what was before me i once again picked up my fork and knife, and once again smiled. the first bite was like reading a wonderful book in one sitting. the different flavors hit my tongue but all in a delibrate order, with the epilogue being a spicy hint lingering in my mouth and mind. the corn succotash was spot on, all the vegetables were well cooked, and the texture was very pleasing. the only off note i would have is perhaps a little less butter, but that is just a personal opinion. the salmon was fresh and perfectly grilled, the spicy butter only added to the already perfect fish. the crowning glory of this piece were the whole fried okras, and try as i might i cannot be unbias with my favorite southern delight. i have never had fried okra with grilled salmon but it was a pair made in culinary heaven. after i had my entree i decided to skip dessert, and rush hour traffic and head home. all in all i would agree, this is one of america's best restaurants and i implore you to take a friday evening to take on this culinary and artistic marvel.

overrated, overpriced. lately, i went a couple of times to the café modern, at the modern art museum of fort worth, to have a decent meal. according to the café's website, gourmet magazine rates them as: "…one of america's best restaurants". perhaps. lately, i went twice to the café and the result is mixed. last week, i came for lunch and had a bánh mì sandwich which was very, very good. today, sunday, i had eggs benedict (only available for sunday brunch) i had been looking forward to. they were kind of disappointing: the apple wood smoked ham was salty, as were the house-made english muffins. the breakfast potatoes were definitely too salty; i left most of it untouched. no comparison to brennan's (in new orleans) eggs benedict. service this sunday was pleasant and polite, but pretty slow, even though i had arrived before the after-church crowd. the beautiful view of the museum and roxy paine's "conjoined" trees compensated for the unexceptional impression of the café. at this time, i feel the café is overrated and overpriced.

disappointing.......... i read the reviews at the urbanspoon and elsewhere concerning cafe modern and elected to try it sunday with my daughter. we arrived soon after the cafe opened at 11:00. the window table overlooking the reflecting pool was pleasant as was our waitstaff......all good starts, but the experience came crashing down as our various appetizers and salads arrived. i think we agreed the fingerling potatoes were the best of the five dishes we sampled, primarily because they were warm and cooked all the way through; the remainder of the offerings we picked at and left most on their serving plates.....truly a disappointing start to our father's day. the cafe appeared to be popular and was quite busy while we were there. perhaps ours was an unusual experience, but it was enough to not give the cafe a second chance.

if you haven't been, cafe modern is inside the modern art museum and overlooks the water and the new development at university and 7th. it's the prime place to plan your next shopping trip to northpark. but let me tell you, even if you choose to purchase
