great coffee but terrible customer service.
i am a law-abiding us citizen and a bellevue home-owner for the past fifteen years. i endeavor to support our local businesses and, over the past months, i’ve been a regular patron at café cesura, located at 1015 108th av. ne.
given my regular visits to café cesura, i receive regular e-mails from them and, yesterday, i went there to use a $2 coupon just i just received. as usual, i ordered a cappuccino and took a seat while i waited for it checking emails, etc.
as i didn’t hear my name called, i approached the counter and asked for my coffee. the lady behind the counter pointed to a paper cup and told me they had called several times and i didn’t come. i explained that i had not heard it (the place was very crowded and noisy) and asked if i could have my coffee in a regular cup instead of the paper cup since i wanted to enjoy it at the store as i’ve always done.
the lady got a cup and threw the coffee into it, spilling it around and making it even colder. i then politely asked again if i could get a new coffee to what another employee (shawn) yelled at me saying: “this is all the coffee you’re going to get today”. i asked why he was so upset and he replied: “i will not deal with this crap today. you’re harassing me and i’ll call the police”.
although i would not have bothered bellevue police with a matter like that, since i hadn’t received the coffee i paid for and shawn took the initiative to call the police, i decided to wait for them to arrive. (later i learned from the police officer that i should have waited outside).
about five minutes later, two officers arrived, walked into the store, approached me and, before even saying “good afternoon” or asking any questions told me: “sir, you are trespassing and you can be arrested for that.”
i was really surprised by this approach and proceeded to explain them what had happened. both officers agreed that shawn’s behavior was excessive but explained me that it was in his rights to request a “notice of trespass”. he did exercise his right and i received the notice.
a day has passed and i am still trying to understand the reasons behind shawn’s completely unacceptable behavior towards a regular customer who was politely asking for something very simple that should never have sparked such behavior from him. unfortunately, the only reasonable explanation i can find is that, for whatever reason in his view, he didn’t like to have my presence in his store.
