comfort food, italian style.. there is something to be said for staying with the tried and true. we all do it in our daily lives. who among us doesn't have a favorite old pair of jeans, tattered and faded, that we prefer to wear over the fancy expensive pair we bought last month? or a beaten up but oh so comfortable pair of sneakers that we wear while puttering around the house or for that trip to home depot? martin crane of the tv show frazier had his comfy old easy chair, that he wouldn't trade for a new leather one for a million dollars.
and so it is with neighborhood restaurants like bruno's. the place reminds us of the favorite italian places of our youth, or, if we were so lucky, of the way our grandma used to cook. solid, tasty, nothing fancy, but it got the job done, and brought a smile to our face.
there is much to like about bruno's. the restaurant is reasonably attractive, if showing some age. it's located in a nondescript strip mall, where dollar tree is the anchor tenant. the menu features many italian classics, done in a style that is guaranteed not to offend. the wine list has a good selection of decent vintages, priced for the neighborhood wallet. service is friendly and prompt, but no one went out of their way to offer any commentary on the offerings. that was okay, because there were no daily, weekly or seasonal specials to comment on.
which only points out why, while i really do enjoy eating at places such as bruno's (and they seem harder and harder to find in this age of chain restaurants), i won't often do it on weekends, when i am more willing to spend a little more, and i desire to eat where the chef understands the importance of using seasonal ingredients, and offering something on the menu that i wouldn't remember from my youth 40 years ago. alas, the chef at bruno's hasn't figured any of that out. which might explain why the average diner on the night of our visit was old enough to warrant their own aarp card, and old enough to be drawing social security. not that older diners don't deserve a trip down memory lane. it's just too bad that people under 30 find little reason to walk through the doors of places like this. unless they are taking grandma out for her birthday.
