great food but for some, it may cost too much. the chicken was great and the waffles too but i don't like that it was too expensive.

let's see where do i start with this place first of all i heard nothing but good things about this place so i couldn't wait to eat there.
ok we get there have to put our name on a list the wait was like an hour finally get to the table place our order we already knew what we wanted i ordered the fried chicken french toast and some hot chocolate let me start by saying the hot chocolate is so good and the homemade whipped cream&syurp is really delicious my waffle was okay but i think i make better at home my chicken was hard on the outside really fried hard not crunchy but hard i can deal with just crunchy but i need some flavor after that crunch i do not like overly hard fried chicken where when you bite into the chicken there's really no meat in the inside because it has been over fried so the meat in the inside is a little bit crispy but the waitress said this is how we fry our chicken when i asked for more chicken our waitresses went on a 15 min break while we were waiting on the remainder of our order so we had to wait on her to return for the rest of our food which by then part of our food was cold oh yeah they over priced so let's just say that i'm giving them a one-star for the whip cream and syurp&waffle hope this helps

brown sugar kitchen is one of those places you hear about in the bay area on all the brunch lists as a “must try”, but i can’t lie when i say i got more interested in trying it when the owner, tanya holland, was on the most recent season of top chef. i also wanted go someplace headed by a minority woman as the food industry does seem to be fully loaded with white men. i have definitely been meaning to get here, but it’s a bit of a trek, plus they were closed for remodelling for awhile, so i was kind of excited when a couple of people i know suggested it for lunch while we were all in oakland. so we headed over there to give it a try. i had high hopes for the restaurant, but after having disappointing experiences at other restaurants from top chef alum (notably 299 parks in alaska and the girl and the goat in chicago), i was hoping that my expectations weren’t too high.

tanya holland the owner and chef made me proud as a black woman and respecter of business and food! lo in' the modern touch on the traditions of soulfood!

be warned: overpriced. i understand you’re paying for a meal from an award-winning chef, but really… we live in the bay area where amazing food is everywhere. the place is loud and overpriced. it’s good every now and then though.

the surroundings are a bit industrial, but inside it's just fabulous food in a pleasant, casual atmosphere. our cheery server brought creamy delicious eggs and grits and lighter than air cornmeal waffles with crispy caramelly outsides... a little bacon, sausage, fresh-squeezed oj and good coffee, and we were on the road to happy town!

the fried chicken was tender and juicy with just the right amount of crispy coating. the syrup was good but not heavenly like some describe.

i have heard several poor reviews of this place from friends, such as things being undercooked or the chicken being overly dry, but i myself have never had a problem here.

waffles!. the waffle with apple cider syrup will literally melt in your mouth. wish i had tried the grits with bbq shrimp as the cheesy grits weren't quite as flavorful and cheesy as i wanted them that day. the consistency of the grits, however, was lovely.

clearly not for those who like creative southern food. brown sugar kitchen is a bit of a misnomer for this place, as you should not expect what its name, owner and menu suggest. the service comes with far too nonchalant on 3 different ocassions, the entire menu is way overpriced and very underwhelming. this was my 3rd time eating here and it just seems to get progressively worse. and the variation on the southern theme are just, well . . . bad. if bland, tasteless, greasy food is your thing by all means have it.
