great service, lackluster food. rating breakdown:
service - 5 stars, a+, amazeballs
food - 2 stars
i really wanted to at least give bourbon bistro 3 stars based on our wonderful waitresses, they were both sweet and incredibly attentive on what was a busy night, but this was unfortunately one of the very few bad dining experiences i've had in louisville.
to begin with, i was honestly pretty surprised when i saw the prices for what is pretty basic food. i know that haute southern cuisine is trending right now, but dressing up inexpensive foods a little does not make it worth a $40-50 per person price tag for dinner.
i started off with the scallop appetizer. for $13, you get two scallops on a smearing of celeriac. this alone would be pricey, but delicious. but instead, they have chosen to top it off with a truffle "vinaigrette". all i could taste in every bite of this dish was truffle oil. every bite was way too bright and incredibly metallic. there was really no reason to put something so strong on a delicate seafood, they would have been much better off topping the scallops with a real mushroom like a cremini or button instead of the strong artificial tasting vinaigrette.
since i wasn't that hungry, i got a salad as my second course. i tried the heart of palm salad, which was a valentine's day special. it was so-so. the dijon vinaigrette was sparse, and the fact that they mentioned it was topped with prosciutto was entirely laughable. there were 7 little prosciutto slivers. my friend ordered the beet salad in which there was not even an entire beet on the bed of arugula (probably again roughly 7 pieces of beet with a few chunks of goat cheese).
her boyfriend got the pork entree which was good, but nowhere near the quality i would expect if i were paying close to $30 for it. i also thought that was pretty convenient that they slimmed down the menu for the entire valentine's day weekend, eliminating less overpriced options like the burgers which seem to get pretty good reviews on yelp (who has currently hidden my review).
