a massive all-day breakfast vibe about this place - they love their eggs! that aside, various salad superbowls, wagyu burgers and aioli chips. i've had the kimchi baked eggs - great for clearing the head and the chicken maryland. the chicken was a nice looking dish and sizeable, albeit a little too dry, while the kimchi baked eggs was a really good dish - recommended if you like some zing. a handful of decent wines to choose from and the rustic industrial-blacksmithy decor gives it a good atmosphere. staff, too, are friendly and fast.

instagrams well but food is shit. they have put all the money and effort in fitting the place out: the cafe photographs well but the food is overpriced and not good. minor changes to the order (like adding something extra that i was willing to pay extra for) was met with such resistance and convoluted discussion it's hardly worth trying. the scrambled eggs were so dry they were like old omelette and came out slightly cold, the butter that came with the toast was almost frozen and, inexplicably, floating in a some water in its little dish...and when you asked for more (that you could actually spread) it was melted in the microwave and starting to split. the toast was also not toasted all the way through, very dough-y. the service is terrible, they are inattentive and they flat out don't listen (for example, you ask for something to come with out something and it turns up on the plate anyway). i paid almost $20 for cold, dry eggs on un-toasted toast. do not bother.

average food, terrible reaction. the decor of blacksmith cafe is lovely, unfortunately not lovely enough to make up for the sub-par food, service, and worse reaction that my friend and i suffered from eating there.
upon arrival, there was some confusion as to where to sit due to the dual-entrance. the waiters themselves seemed confused whether or not to seat us, or just let us be. once seated, we were given cute menus (again, not cute enough to balance out what came next), and within 2 minutes, we were asked 3 times whether we were ready to order. we felt rushed, and that the waiting system wasn't really efficient.
we ordered milkshakes, the french toast and the soft shell crab burger. wait time was fine, and the food was fine. each substantial item on the menu ran approx $20. the bill came in a cute little metal pocket, as we paid and were on our way.

that night however, my friend and i both suffered reactions to the food. i personally had nausea, swollen throat, and hives, my friend suffered the same but no hives. we both have no allergies to any of the food on the menu, and we're both not sure what happened, but my hives and swelling caused me much grief. not saying it was 100% blacksmith food, but i had eaten nothing but blacksmith cafe food that day, not been exposed to any new elements (that i was aware of), and my friend who ingested the same food also had a similar reaction.

will not be returning, and will be issuing a friendly warning to any friends/readers.

i can't even detail this review right now because i'm too smashed from the food. apple crumble french toast. do i need to say anything more. no. but i will - french toast with syrup and an apple crumble topping - this was insane. my bro had he smithy breakfast burger; a brioche with egg, bacon, cheese, pickle slaw, beetroot relish. amazing. vintage vibe to the place, easy location near central.

blacksmith cafe is a nicely designed large sized cafe. close to central station, its convenient location makes it an easy choice for breakfast or lunch. i have visited this cafe several time and have had mixed opinions about the food overall. coffee is quite mediocre too

have all the potential but must pick up their game when it comes to the food. i went here the first time last week after my swim at prince alfred pool. i was immensely impressed with the interior and feel of the place - it feels as if harry potter would appear any minute. the food was average, had scrambled eggs which cost $14 with bread. that is expensive. coffee was not too bad - toby estate is great coffee. the service was ok but the atmosphere felt tense between the staff who worked that afternoon.

today i had the same deal and i must say i'm disappointed. the eggs were dry and tasteless and there was no staff around to service. i truly hope that blacksmith cafe will pick up their act, particularly when it comes to the quality of the food, this place has soooo much potential and i hope that this is just teething problems. i'm tempted to not come back but i will give you guys another try as i don't want to miss the chance to see harry potter :-) good luck!

i’d been past blacksmith on a previous visit to surry hills and put it on my to visit list – i managed to stop by recently for an early lunch. the space is definitely true to the theme, with assorted ironwork and more rivets than you can poke a stick at. the menu has some exciting options, but, being me, i decided to try the wagyu beef burger ($22), plus a side of sweet potato chips to share ($8). the burger came out on a large platter with a smattering of chips and a small dish of aioli. the burger was piled up so high, and when i squished it down, a whole lot of creamy mayonnaise oozed out – definitely not in the ‘elegant to eat’ burger category. but that mayonnaise was worth saving from the platter, as it was utterly delicious! the patty was a bit diappointing – there were small bits of gristle and the outside wasn’t charred or crisp at all, as i had expected for the price – but the mayo certainly brought the level up a notch. the sweet potato chips were probably the highlight and were generously portioned, to the point where we needed a takeaway bag. i’ll be back to try some of their fun-sounding brunch items.

i dont understand the other reviews here. the food and service are fine. coffee is ok, nothing to write home about. the brekkie burger is very good, easy to eat. scram was a big serve too.

a heater on the wall was a nice touch.

the fit out is truly unique. the only tip i can give is avoid the marble topped seats-cold!

the cafe / bar is stunning, in an old industrial style setting. sit down service is great. it’s popular for pre-work breakfast meetings. it’s a good place to set up your laptop for a while as it feels very private and is not too noisy. morning coffee takeaway is busy, but they are efficient. more keep ups than you usually see passing over the counter.

i wish there were an option for 4.5 because blacksmith fits it perfectly. i ordered for the veggie smitty burger before arriving at the place as i was running late, when i reached there i had to wait for like two mins at max, and my order was ready. i had customised my burger without egg, and they add avocado instead! only a few cafes understand how to go above and beyond to impress a customer. blacksmith is one of them!

i’ve mentioned it before in my blogs but i have great admiration for any restaurant in sydney that has staying power. it’s a tough business, a tough market, and lots of work. blacksmith in surry hills has staying power, and seems to be ticking along nicely making great food in a fun atmosphere.

(2.5/5.0) blacksmith is the inner city offshoot of mona vale’s blacksmith. located along chalmers street, a stone’s throw away from central station, the mysterious cafe features a pirate-like interior with copper coloured tables and utensils, wooden doors and frames and white overhanging lamps interspersed with greenery. the menu throws a few twists to classical brunches.

i started my day with a flat white. with roasted beans from toby’s estate, the flat white exudes a kind of aroma and has a great combination of espresso and milk. the soft, smooth, velvety foam adds to the flavour.

the artisan benedict’s, a refreshing variant of the typical poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, features delicious well-marinated pulled pork topping potato rosti. however, the hash browns/rosti were overcooked and hard. similarly, the chef could be more generous with the hollandaise sauce.
