black cow cafe. if you say that cornflake encrusted french toast isn't important to you then i would say you were lying. corn flakes encrusting anything is pure heaven. these days i can't really have them so i prefer to sit with a french press, scrambled egg whites & thick ass bacon while i button push on my iphone. heehee

but if i go back as far as....well....when my dad was in verdugo hills hospital fighting to stay alive i would have to say that a coffee and one of black cows wonderful salads comforted me daily.

located in the charming town of montrose, this all day eatery opens in the morning catering to locals drinking piping hot coffee, while nibbling on blueberry muffins, croissants and breakfast delights. there are banana pancakes; strawberry and banana french toast; egg dishes and a variety of skillet dishes. the breakfast potatoes are very good here. they also like to serve fresh fruit.

for lunch -,people like to sit out front on a warm day and enjoy a salad or a sandwich. their house salad is quite good and their dressings are delicious. they make three different wraps and cook up some really good burgers, including a black bean veggie style burger. they also make a soup of the day and serve a bowl of three-bean chili. it's served with a thick slice of moist zucchini bread. the pasta dishes are quite good too. i love their passion fruit flavor - no sugar - iced tea.
kids love the ice cream here. it's fosselman's. the cappuccino crunch is my favorite.

dinner offers many of the lunch items, plus oven roasted turkey with cranberries, mashed potatoes and chef's selection of veggies. they serve meatloaf with gravy, mashed potatoes and vegetables. the buttermilk fried chicken arrives with three pieces with mashed potatoes, gravy, hawaiian coleslaw, biscuit and house made jam. there is also some fish entrees and specials if the day. usually salmon or halibut, but also shrimp and crab cake dinners.

they serve different bread at dinner, not the delicious zucchini bread. it's good, but not as sweet.

the 6 oz. petit filet mignon is cooked to your preference and served with tarragon hollandaise, mashed potatoes with vegetables.

there are a few mexican entrees and bbq specialties during dinner.

they do serve wine and beer. after dinner walk along the sidewalk and window shop. it's a quaint village with many owner owned businesses - a bookstore, skateboard shop, sewing shop, pet store and candy shop. not a lot of chain stores.

television production companies film around here often.

this place is charming, a favorite neighborhood eatery with delicious food and super friendly service. this is the kind of place that brings value to a community because the decor is delightful, the food is sublime, the service is inviting and people will choose to come back again and again and again. if you go for breakfast, try the country biscuits and gravy. trust me! i haven't had any this good since my southern grandmother's. enjoy!

horrible service. let me start by saying i am a local, i live about 2 blocks away, and i've eaten here plenty of times. it has never been my favorite or first choice, but i've always been happy to eat here. the food is decent (not amazing), but better than "just okay".

anyway, this morning i met a couple of friends there for breakfast accompanied by my picky-eating toddler. i ordered the 3 egg breakfast and requested that 2 of the eggs be over-medium (for me), and 1 of the eggs be scrambled (for the picky toddler). you woulda thought i was asking for this guy to hang the freakin' moon the way he treated me. "let me ask the chef" says the waiter. really? you have to ask the "chef"? last i checked, eggs are simple to make, and last i checked, this was a simple request and last i checked, i'm paying for it.

so he asks the "chef" and my request is denied. again, really? when i told the waiter i was really disappointed, i didn't get a single apology or any empathy, he simply shrugged and got super defensive, saying, "i have nothing to do with it, i have no control..." and on and on. ridiculous. he basically told me that if i start ordering things a special way, they'd have to do it for everyone, well guess what dude? you are providing a service and product and you should do things special if someone wants it done that way! also, there were 2 other tables occupied in the entire place, no one would have known that they had helped me out.

guess what, black cow, i will never ever patronize your restaurant or any other restaurant associated with you again. i have lots of friends and i will share my stupid egg story with all of them. how pretentious are you that you won't help out a paying customer with a small kid? lame.

also, when i called to speak with a manager, i was told, "it is our policy not to modify dishes, so sorry". basically she was saying, "i don't care if you're unhappy, f off."

awesome!. i had the pleasure of dining at the black cow cafe tonight. my friend suggested we eat there and she and i went with our total of 4 kids. wow! i was incredibly impressed and look forward to returning again soon.

ronn, our server, gave us outstanding service. he was incredibly friendly, patient and helpful. there was never a moment that we were trying to track him down. he stopped by our table frequently and sometimes even seemed to know what we needed before we even asked. i know we were a "high maintenance" table. having 4 kids with us resulted in quite a few special requests and ronn always provided what we needed with a genuine smile. we were very impressed with his patience and friendliness with our children.

to make the evening even better i had the orange roughy. the fish was phenomenal! very moist and flavorful. truly the best fish dish i have eaten.

great decor, service. not so good taste.. i ordered the soup of the day and the quiche. the soup was tasty but the quiche wasn't that great. the chicken was dry, the sundried tomatoes (and regular tomatoes) didn't mix well with the other ingredients. i paid $19 for the two. was it worth it? no.
