located on the 12th floor of the 5th avenue financial center building, experience modern american food with french and mediterranean influences at bertrand at mister a’s. just minutes from downtown, this stunning fine dining penthouse restaurant is light and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows boasting panoramic views of san diego bay, balboa park, coronado, point loma, and even the world-famous san diego zoo.

amazing. pricey menu but the flavour is fabulous. incredible views of san diego. filet mignon was so tasty and the short ribs were divine. the accompanying sides were interesting and well cooked. one of the best tasting high end meals i've ever had.

one of the best views in sd! watch the planes come in for landing as you look over downtown. i recommend sitting outside. why would you sit inside when you can be outside with that breathtaking view! it perfect place to take your special someone. i've been here for both brunch &&& dinner.

wow! really wow!. we have been here a few times when we visit san diego and each time it was a fantastic experience. the food is amazing and the service is worthy of 5 stars. the menu is unique and it inspired us to step out of the box and try some new things. it is a nice treat to come here. the view from the patio is also the best in all of san diego.

had my 30 wedding anniversary here last week and they were on a fixed menu due to restaurant week in sd. they service was good but out waiter was over the top trying to be french so we understood every other word since we don't speak french. food was moderate to good but the atmosphere and views were worth the price.

setting: a beautiful view.
food: ordered the kobe burger medium. it was served well done. the dessert chocolate mousse bar very good.
service: asked to take my appetizer away while eating it. gave me a burger that was well done, when i ordered it medium. asked once during the appetizer how my food was. mainly felt like i was pushed out.

taking bertrand at mister a's off our list. currently on vacation in san diego. had booked two dinners at bma during this trip as it had been very good in the past (2010 was the last time that we ate there). had our last dinner there this past saturday night.

the evening started off on the wrong foot entirely. i had requested a table outside, if possible, while making our reservation on open table. the maitre d' made no mention of our request when he sat us at what is arguably their worst table, on the upper tier by the water station. we complained and magically a table at the window became available. we moved to the table at the window and noticed that there were empty tables outside. wtf?

the next disappointment came with the wine list. i noticed that the 2009 kongsgaard chardonnay was double the price that cucina urbana was charging (we ate at cu on fri night - excellent value, food and atmosphere). bma's wine list is not what it used to be! as an example, their selection of italian wines was relatively pitiful. we ended up ordering the oreno for ~$175 as most of the other italian wines were either not rated over 90 or were not "ready", i.e. their earliest drink by date was 2014 or later. unfortunately i know that the oreno "costs" around $60, which exposed bma's mark up.

the final disappointment was the food. suffice to say that it was ok but lacked "soul". there really was nothing imaginative as an example on my $43 new york strip loin plate. we understand that they have a new chef. we had expected to see something interesting from him.

bma still has the best view in san diego. too bad that the $450 price tag left us feeling highly abused by our experience.

bottom line - we cancelled our second dinner reservation and will not be returning on our next vacation.

great food with a view. my wife and i were recently in san diego and the concierge at our hotel arranged reservations at bertrand for us. we wanted a high end resteraunt for our last night in town. bertrand at mister a's did not disappoint. we were seated and enjoying a glass of wine as we watched the sun set over the bay. the steak was cooked perfectly and the sides were excellent. the appetizer was probalby our favorite item as we'd never had one before, it was a flaky pastry crust around large pieces of lump lobster meat. think lobster bisque but that you can eat with a fork. it was very good and was the perfect started for a great meal. if you go on a weekend night make reservations our you won't get in as it was packed the night we went. it was an expensive evening but well worth it.
