really disappointing as i’ve been coming to beach babylon for many year w my whānau. went here with a friend for brunch and decided to order a mojito (for context i rarely drink and was just feeling a nice minty lime time) my drink came and i’m not even being dramatic when i say it tasted like straight lime juice and some battered mint. ’ve worked in hospo for 5+ years and was on the fence about wether it was just a me problem but when my friend tried they agreed it was not how a mojito should taste and wasn’t even drinkable. (i’m a well versed mojito maker, really not a hard drink to excel at). i decided to go up to the bar and politely ask if it could be remade. i was met with, quite frankly, one of the rudest exchanges i’ve ever had with another hospo worker. they rudely told me ‘that’s how a mojito tastes’, interesting because i was under the impression a mojito had other flavours and notes other than sour lime juice. she then proceeded to drink my drink in front of me, and when i sat down a man came over and asked if i just had wanted more alcohol. when i said no, i just wanted a mojito that didn’t taste like a whole lime and some bitter crushed to the moon mint (not my words at the time) he just walked away and proceeded to drink my drink and stare at me. funny how none of them finished it though and all grimaced after their obnoxiously large gulps (interesting response in covid times too).
not trying to be a prissy princess but given the average cost of a mojito is about $14 in wellington i expect to at least receive a drinkable beverage. funny because when i asked how much lime they put in it she answered with ‘well how much lime would you put in it’, obviously expecting me not to know. when i responded with half to a whole of fresh lime juice she went red and stuttered that they used a fair bit more than that. mint doesn’t need to be ground down ether, ruins the flavour fyi.
the food here’s fantastic but i know for a fact they’re being let down by their rude and untrained staff. sort it out, hospo can be crap but it’s also not hard to be kind and at the very least, civil with your customers, know this from experience.
