if you’re looking for a fun, entertaining dinner then barton g. will definitely be your go-to. think you’re just ordering a standard steak on a white plate? wrong. you will be surprised in the best way at the presentation of each and every dish ordered.

this was one of a kind dining experience. food presentations i have never seen before. we tried the bucket of bones and the dolla dolla bills y'all. the servers and the chef were helpful in taking care of my meat preferences for the bucket of bones.
the bucket of bones was passable. the sauce was too sweet to my liking. the kettle chips were ok. the dessert was fine. we didn't try out too many things so can't comment much on the food.

do this if you are in miami.

food: 3/5
presentation: 5/5
service: 4/5
ambience: 4/5
value for money: 3/5
overall:4/5

marie antoinette’s head – let them eat cake with cotton candy, yesteryear candies, and a bananas foster “shake”. barton g has always been a star on his stage of creating highly creative, bold, almost theatrical eating in what has always been a fun south beach experience. we’re not talking european style molecular gastronomy. this is american in its themes and drama. i hadn’t been back there for close to ten years, just because i’m always pulled to try the new places. but an invitation to try the new menu came in conjunction with the south beach wine and food festival, so off i went, a cold and all.my curiosity was especially piqued because how, i asked myself, with all of the competition in dining experiences, could barton g the restaurant still wow diners?

this has to have been one of the most entertaining restaurants i've been to. however as many of the reviewers of
late have mentioned, the over the top presentation plus the mediocre quality of the food just doesn't add up to
the exorbitant price. but it's still worth 4 stars for the unique delivery and atmosphere. as long as you go on
payday with low expectations for the food itself you will definitely have a good time.

although the restaurant appears to be very upscale, guest attire ranged from dressy to beach casual.
their liquid nitrogen cocktails come out "smoking" and are a great topic of conversation at the table, however
they are going to set you back thee hamiltons each.

i passed on the $30 cocktail for two reasons: 1) i enjoy food way more than drinks and 2) mojitos are free all night
long at deb's place.

so the group of us picked out a variety of entrees and sides. i got the asian-inspired duck confit and a side of
the french onion soup.

in retrospect the the best part of the meal (at least for me) was the time between ordering the food and getting the
food. why? because that's when we were free to watch everyone else get their food. you'd hear entire tables of people laugh and giggle as these, sometimes monstrous, contraptions would come out with the food.

steak might be served with a huge four foot fork sticking out of the serving "device" (too big to be called a plate).

huge lobster tails were delivered in an large lighthouse (with working interior light).

a ball of cotton candy so large it must require special training to get it to the table safely.

we hooted and hollered along with everyone else and we watched in amazement as people took pictures of the
dinner plates of random strangers. we even witnessed one patron, after receiving that huge ball of cotton candy
offer some to everyone in shouting distance.

this was the ultimate instagram hunting ground.

when my food arrived there was a life-sized legless duck made of wood sitting next to my entree. it took me a
minute to get the joke. at least i can only assume that there is some intentionally dark (if not obscure) humor in
presenting a legless wooden duck with a dish that centers around poached duck legs.

my friend deb got a fish dish which was served with a 3 or 4 foot fishing pole and hook attached to the plate.

my buddy neal got the lamb shank (served in a doggie bowl). craig got the tuna and michelle got the chicken
(both of which were served on far less crazy plates).

so all this talk so far has been about the way the food was presented. and that's probably because the actual
food itself was just ok to above average.

the french onion soup was nothing extraordinary - in fact i found the crouton to be "tough". i actually had to
resort to using a knife to cut it into pieces (instead of it simply pulling apart with a fork).

the confit, itself, was a delicious. who'd have ever thought about combining it with hoisin dipping sauce and stir
fried vegetables?? it could have worked except, the way it's served: the duck legs are sitting in a bowl on top of
the veggies. so by the time i consumed the duck the veggies were just swimming in the fatty drippings.

so in addition to the deep fried duck egg roll and the fatty confit i was left to finish with what seemed to be a fatty
soup of vegetables. don't get me wrong, the flavor was good, but the meal was just very heavy and not well
balanced.

the portion sizes, though, were rather large.

so in summary: this place has definitely found their niche: plating and delivery. i would definitely recommend
going and seeing it person, but i'd recommend you go and just get an appetizer or drink or dessert. not only will
you'll be there long enough to see lots of fun dishes go by, but you can take comfort in the fact that you're not
missing out by watching others eat them.

oh and are you still looking for "deb's place"? you know the one that has free mojitos all night long? sorry, but
it's not on zomato! :)

presentation not worth the price. when the average of the main course are 35 the waiter should inform in diners when the special is $89. this is very deceiving and the waiter know exactly what they are doing. when i ordered this dish i wanted to ask for questions like the cut and price and the waiter rushed off. when i ask my waiter which had the most over the top presentation he named me the three most expensive dishes instead. having read the reviews i knew this wasn't true.
i got surf and turf. the lobster clearly pre cooked cause it was re heated un evenly. the highlight was the fries. presentation of drink and dessert was good. surf and turf with a helmet wasn't too impressive.

our sobe september food experiences..... on a recent week long break in miami (6 to 13 september 2014) we dined in various restaurants including il sole by barton g, pied a terre, the restaurant by barton g and cafe prima pasta (dined in casa tua previously). in terms of service, quality of food, ambience and overall experience we would rate them in the following order (***** = our star rating)

1. pied a terre *****
2. cafe prima pasta ****
3. the restaurant by barton g ***
4.il sole by barton g. **

our dinner spend was fairly high in the barton g restaurants. the restaurant was fun, and a one off experience. the service, food and experience was good and we had a lovely evening, smaller deserts are needed as they are so big they could serve 4-6 people easily.

we were very disappointed by il sole where the service could at best be described as haphazard (got the wrong wine, conflicting information about what was and was not available on the menu, asked if we wanted pre drinks in the cocktail bar, then we were not even served them before we were instructed to go to the dining room, snobby hosts and door staff, are a few issues that you should not expect in such a restaurant). having dined in michelin star restaurants all over the world they are a long long way off attaining any accolades in my opinion. we would not return , nor recommend it as it is over priced and badly run. the highlight was of course to see inside the former versace mansion which is an experience but not worth the money given all the issues they have with their service.

pied a terre was excellent. the food was exquisite, wine list exceptional (for such an intimate restaurant) and service by young staff attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. we love french food and would rate there dishes as highly as any as we have eaten in france. the sommelier and manager (i think) was very knowledgeable and he briefly showed us around after we had dined which was a lovely and unexpected treat.

we dined at casa prima pasta on september 9 and were very impressed with the menu , greeting, service, food and overall ambience. thanks to giuseppe marino (gm) for the complimentary drink on arrival and his interest in why we had choosen to dine at the restaurant. very personal and attentive service, coupled with delicious food.

oh and got a great breakfast at finnegans way, south beach, great canadian bacon!
