barcelona wine bar

while modern-day connecticut taverns are a far cry from the taverns of old spain, barcelona restaurant and wine bar in new haven is serving an assortment of tapas inspired by its namesake city. the temple street location, one among the small chain of ten, is easy to miss. there is no sign for the restaurant. but it is there, located right next to the omni new haven hotel. look for the sturdy wooden door...

excellent quality and prep. though we had a different maitre d and server on visit #2, friendliness and professionalism appear to be the byword at barcelona. this visit, on an early sunday evening, coincided with yale graduation ceremonies so there were a large number of servers in apparent anticipation of higher occupancy later in the evening. the menus and our drink orders were shortly followed by hot, right out of the oven, crusty bread with olive oil. we started off with chorizo with sweet-sour figs which proved to be light on the figs. much better were our chicken empanadas with a spicy guacamole. the crust was flaky with the filling being spicy and delicious. our second order included a small plate of sauteed escarole with garlic and chili. like the empanadas that preceded it, this was the best rendition of this dish i have ever experienced. we also had the monkfish a la plancha which was very moist and tasty. though portion size is sometimes a negative, the quality and preparation of each dish is excellent.

high quality. we visited last sunday at around 4:30pm and found the restaurant to be fairly busy given the early hour. we were greeted at the door by a personable young man who seated us at a table for 2. our server was equally personable and offered some advice while supplying us with menus and water. we were given warm crusty bread and olive oil while we waited for our first tapas to arrive. the first 2 were eggplant caponata and jamon (ham) and chicken croquettes. both were very good, but we were surprised by the price (high) to size quotient. our next order, crispy calamari came with a tangy pepper aioli. the calamari turned out to be less crispy and more tender than i expected – excellent. our last order was a shared flan that was creamy deliciousness. service throughout was friendly and professional.

i've been wanting to try barcelona for a very long time. finally got to try it, and it did not disappoint. we ordered a bunch of tapas and their paella. everything was exceptional, esp the empanadas. the paella was to die for. we only ordered the portion for 2, but it was enough to feed all 6 of us! their mojitos is okay, but strong. you will definitely get your money well worth at this place. the only downside is, this place gets exceptionally loud. if you'd like to actually have a decent conversation with your friends or date, try somewhere else or go during the day.

good selection of tapas, a nice drink menu and promptish service. gets crowded on weekdays, so it's good to plan ahead. great location in downtown new haven.

definitely not like before, tapas got smaller and more expensive, once in a while i like to to go and see what's new, been coming here for years, i missed the one in greenwich. the does not specified if the plate is spicy or not. drunken goat a la plancha never thought it was only cheese in tomato preserve (it was delicious) too loud on a sunday evening, not authentic spanish music (just an american guy playing american acoustic music) i prefer to listen some gipsy kings in a "spanish" restaurant not bettles .

tapas (small plates) is one of my favorite restaurant style, and barcelona got tapas at the level of perfection. albondigas, patatas bravas, jamón and manchego croquetas, crispy pork belly - everything was delicious. dessert were excellent too.
wine list is an absolute standout - unmatched selection of spanish wines with lots of very reasonably priced wines.
excellent service, prompt, friendly and attentive.
most highly recommended.

plate-licking good. that's really all you need to know. actually we didn't have to lick the plates because the manager came over to say hello and then brought us some bread to wipe up the plates, which we left clean.

barcelona is so hip that it has an unmarked door. fred had tried them when he stayed at the omni hotel, which it is right next door to, and raved so much about it that i had to try it out.  pictured above is the hangar steak, probably the most frequently mentioned tapas dish on yelp.  unfortunately, it was a little on the chewy side, despite appearing a perfectly pink medium-rare.

this is a tapas place, and we tend to like those. it’s in an area just packed with restaurants, bars and clubs, and as the evening progressed people descended on the block surrounding in droves. barcelona has a large outdoor seating area streetside, which was crowded on a warm, late summer evening. we opted for inside, and were shown to a large booth. the table size worked well as tapas are the order of the day and many plates were likely to arrive. the atmosphere is soothing but still carries energy, as the dark woods are offset by some gleaming metal and glass, and the glass case wine wall provides the main architectural highlight. we liked it immediately.

food is consistently good. menu could be improved with the addition of more vegetarian and chicken/fish dishes. always plenty of pork and beef. service is usually really good as well, though i do not enjoy sitting at the bar--the bartenders are usually talking to their friends on the other side of the bar, and are otherwise unfriendly and not enthusiastic to take your order. sangria and sometimes the mixed drinks (worse during happy hours) are often heavy with ice. for the record i've been here dozens of times. norwalk location i've never had a bad experience (also dozens of visits).

life. changing. the lamb chops were cooked perfectly and well rested. the salty grilled outer coating, the medium rare meat on the inside, all combined with the peppery arugula, and the tangy romesco sauce was an amazing flavor combination. the romesco was the perfect blend of bitxo peppers, roasted nuts and garlic, fused together with a light oil. mucho bueno!
