choosing a restaurant in barangaroo is such a difficult task; everything looks so good! after walking up and down the restaurant strip a couple of times we decided on banksii! we were met by a charming manager and she explained the concept of the restaurant and the idea behind the name! as we guessed, it is named after sir joseph banks, the botanist; not the street artist as many people may presume! the fitout seems to relate to plants, or so we thought, with pendant lights dancing like blossoming flowers, and the kitchen area is housed behind smoky glass like an old fashioned greenhouse. hanging vines and plants add to the green atmosphere! decided to share three dishes as we were mildly hungry:-
1) the roasted and smoked beetroot salad, goats curd, pomegranate and walnut
2) the prawn and fennel bisque, balmain bug, prawn, pipis and mussels
3) mussels cooked in white vermouth, green olives, herb butter

the verdict: omg....all dishes were outstanding! possibly the favourite dish was the bisque which was so flavoursome and luckily came with bread to mop up every last bit of juice! the salad was the most visually stunning beetroot salad imaginable and the mussels were plump, juicy and memorable. will certainly return to try the rest of the menu. a perfect choice in a competitive environment!

came here for mother's day lunch. i like that they don't have those over-priced mother's day set lunch. we were able to order from the normal menu and we've chosen the very reasonably priced 7 course banquet (8 courses including bread)
my favorite dish will have to be the beef short ribs. melted in the mouth, soft and amazingly tender. a must order if you are planning to go.
dessert was a berry trifle. nice light finish for a very decent meal.
credits to the restaurant for being able to accommodate our request to swap one of the dishes due to allergy. staff was kind enough to give me the prawn dish but swap it with a carrot salad for my auntie as she is allergic to prawns. extra point for being so accommodating.

the restaurant offers nice ambience and decoration. however, foodwise, for me who really enjoys tasty food aka with a lot of spices and seasonings, i wouldn’t say anything really stands out. the garlic bread was alright, wished the garlic taste is stronger tho, sticky beef rib was too bland for me, but yhe meat was tender, some of the mussels tasted a bit funny and the pork belly was just okay.

also ordered the vivid special sangria. apart from the unique presentation, the taste itself wasn’t strong enough.

however, staffs were friendly and i enjoyes the vivid experience on the streets

lovely post work dinner with a table of 8. started with a vermouth aperitif which was quite nice, simple and fresh. starters were tasty. we had a minute steak, lamb, chicken and snapper to share for our mains. all were delicious. my fav would have to be the steak and snapper. dessert wasn't the best though i had the trifle, the sponge was a little dry. others had a cheese plate which they loved.

the chicken was juicy and the serving is very generous too. the jus was packed with flavour which went well with the protein and the almonds gave it a crunch element which i absolutely love.

came here for a friends birthday and the staff were so thoughtful by gifting her a box of chocolate with a handwritten note.
staff were great and attentive and the kingfish main was an absolute standout

we arrived late in evening for drinks as kitchen was about to close. staff walked past us multiple times without acknowledgement. we were about to leave but then we’re finally greeted. shoved in a cramped corner outside, where we had to move plant foliage to get through. there were plenty of open tables in the dining space at the time (which weren’t needed as the kitchen was closing). the waitstaff were we

the absolute worst restaurant experience to date.

my partner and i dined at banksii for the valentine's day 8 course menu. you'd expect that at $149 per head, you'd be served all your dishes on the menu at the very least. upon being seated, we only glanced at the menu before it was quickly taken away from our table, which we initially found rather odd but didn't think any further into. it was only at the end of our meal and having paid for dinner, did we notice the second round of customers enjoying two dishes on the menu that we hadn't received. we’re extremely disappointed that not once throughout the night did any staff bring this to our attention. we requested for the menu not once, but twice, and each time this was unfulfilled.

at the end of the night, we raised to a waiter that we believed we hadn’t been served two dishes. not once was an apology made by himself or the manager. instead, he offered us one complimentary pre-drinks voucher each for future use. we refused this, as we’d rather the dishes be deducted from our bill at this point. we made this very clear, however he made us feel extremely uncomfortable, and strongly pressured us to accept the voucher, repeatedly saying “this is a better deal, it’s worth more than your two dishes, you’ll only receive $8 off your bill otherwise.” we reiterated that the vouchers won't be of use to us as we don't frequent the area, to which he then rudely snatched the vouchers off us and stormed off to the register to reprocess our bill. he came back and without a word unmannerly placed the eftpos machine in front of us, with a grand total deduction of… $4. first of all, at $149 per head, 2 courses on the menu definitely does not equate to $4. secondly, one course is a pre-existing dish on their menu valued at over $10, at the exclusion of their inflated valentine’s day pricing. we requested to speak to the manager who was available on the floor, but she refused to even present herself to us. the waiter’s response to this? - "we've already refunded you $4. we weren't even going to deduct anything from your bill." this is completely appalling and unacceptable. utter dishonest service to advertise 8 courses, only to serve 6 and refuse to even remunerate the difference, let alone offer a single word of apology.

it's a real shame that several tables next to us also only received 6 dishes, but were most likely completely unaware, as they left before the second round of bookings arrived. this only leads us to believe that the removal of the menus from our tables was intentional and very deceitful.

the rest of the service was extremely poor. it took almost 2.5 hours for six courses to trickle out. the food was ordinary to say the very least. a lot of our requests were ignored, water was not refilled and cutlery was placed directly onto our unclean table.

we most definitely will never be coming back or recommending banksii to any friends or family.

a nightcap after a burger from ume burger, and my friends weren't really familiar with vermouth. so, it was a good opportunity to try them, and i was amazed at their selection, surely the largest to be found in sydney. it started to rain so we popped in from the crowded outside into the bar at the back, which is pretty charming, and the service was charming and efficient too, considering how busy it was. i'll come back to try the food sometime too. the reviews here look good!

to me, it was the perfect meal:
- i was seated outside, in the sun, watching people go by
- i ordered some oysters and they were fresh and sweet
- i ordered the kingfish and it came medium rare, which was fabulous
service was very attentive and not too ott.
loved it!
