i first discovered baker’s hut because i had gone to dilli swaad, its next door neighbour - - now if that isn’t a beautiful example of symbiotic externalities then what is!! this time i first went to baker’s hut and then went to dilli swaad to prove to nobody in particular that i loved them both in their own way!
baker’s hut is a bakery sure but because of the little sit-out it has in the front, it is more importantly, a hangout place. now you could sit at dilli swaad too but you can’t quite hangout there – for that, you may want to shift the meet-up with friends next door. see the symbiosis at work between the two joints?
the day i am detailing was one in which, may lord jesus bestow choicest blessings on them, they were freshly baking their christmas plum cakes (rs 120 each) for the day/week and i picked a still-warm-in-the-plastic-packing loaf of cake from that lot. nothing can beat warm cake, fresh out of the oven. it was gorgeous – dark, nutty, rich – as i later discovered at home for a few blessed days definitely. it was also pleasantly less dense than usual plum cakes one gets to buy off the shelf. indeed i began singing christmas carols early this year thanks to baker’s hut;-)
along with the cake, i also picked up their masala cheese khari (@ rs 50 for a pack of 250gms i think) which i try picking up every time no matter what else i am eating. they are the narrow long twisted ones the size of say a lollipop. ideal tea dunking gear. they are extremely addictive and with a good cup of tea, i can polish off half a packet myself at a single sitting unless checked. they have a plain version too which i sometimes take in combination with the masala one.
i also picked up sesame buns (mere rs 15 for a pack of two) – wonderful sweet buns i enjoyed as both a burger bun and as a bun omelette bun for the next two days. they have breads, puffs, rolls, pizaa bases, biscuits, kulcha, suji toasts and all other such de rigueur bakery stuff as well of course. there walnut cake is another favourite of mine. please note the only thing i have never had from here are their cream cakes/pastries – how strange & shameful is that!!! incidentally you could call them and place the order for cake, as the helpful man on the counter informed me – i think there was hint there somewhere! from the number of people gorging on the pastries while sitting outside and chatting, i am sure those are delectable as well. i propose to set this dubious record straight next time.
