a must try!

delectable dishes, fun atmosphere and wonderful staff. ordered angeline's gumbo, oyster po' boy, and buttermilk fried chicken and of course beignet for dessert...scrumptious!

parking is a pain (probably best to walk from a nearby paid parking lot or take uber/lyft).

early in the day we tried booking a reservation online but they were already booked for the night! we took our chances and went anyway to see how long we would have to wait until we were seated. we ended up waiting half an hour which was pretty reasonable considering how packed the place was!

although there is definitely an urban vibe to angeline’s it is also incredibly warm and comfortable. despite being busy we could still hear each other speak despite the crowd.

the sparkling strawberry lemonade was absolutely worth the $4! so delicious. my sister's root beer was also very good. we ordered the hush puppies with honey butter to share between us, as well as the grilled boudin traditional cajun pork with rice sausage and creole mustard and arugula. the sausage was delicious and quite spicy but those hush puppies? my word they were outstanding! crispy on the outside, light and fluffy but with that cornmeal bite in the centre and the honey butter oozing on top. divine! a great way to start.

i finally had my first po’boy and it came with a spicy potato salad. i got the shrimp po’boy and asked for them to hold the hot sauce but keep the creole mustard and it worked perfect. the shrimp were super crispy and the overall sandwich absolutely delicious and quite filling.

my sisters both ordered the buttermilk fried chicken with ginger-vanilla sweet potato mash, tasso ham cream gravy and blue lake green beans with parmesan. i had considered getting it as well but i was worried the sweet potato mash would be too sweet for me. one shared her fried chicken with me and it was perfection and that mash? delicious. justin was in heaven with his meat fest the cajun mixed grill. everything was so good.

i was a little nervous about going to angeline’s louisiana kitchen because i thought the food would be too spicy for me but man, am i ever glad we went. they accommodated my lack of spice tolerance (although i think i did quite well with the creole mustard) and the food was absolutely fantastic.

this place is definitely worth the wait. warm and cozy atmosphere, comfort food that will heal the soul and even the soft drinks are divine.

i was in berkeley for some work and decided to stop for a quick lunch at angeline's and i'm so glad i did. the place looks pretty basic from the outside but has been done up pretty well inside. i was quickly seated and my server got me started with something to drink.

all i ordered to eat was a wild mushroom jambalaya. i was impressed the minute they put the bowl in front of me because of its amazing aroma and i kept falling in love with the dish with every spoon. the rice was cook to perfection and was full of flavor, generously loaded with wild mushrooms and topped with freshly chopped green onions. the dish had just the right amount of spice as well.

the prices are a little steep but worth every dime spent. i am definitely going back for more.

this place was great! the food wasn't that pricey and the food itself was great. my grand parents are southern natives and it tasted like it was imported from their home. would suggest that anybody in berkeley gives this place a visit.

angelina's was our lunch destination on the warm berkeley after noon. my great grandmother and i pulled up in front angelia's and walked in and was greeted at the door by a friendly girl that sat us close to the entrance by the window. it had a nice atmosphere tastefully decorated with a new orleans them but not overly done. the lunch menu is the the same as the dinner menus and the price are the same ... but i did note there is more of a selection during lunch then dinner ?!. my great grandmother got a fried shrimp po boy( deconstructed) $13.99 being with a side of gumbo and i got the crawfish étouffée $13.99 it was good but it was only warm when i got it . my great grandmother enjoyed her deconstructed shrimp po boy and the shrimp was fried to perfection and was good and hot . the gumbo had a good taste to it. it had a familiar taste that my grandmothers gumbo has , but was a little to thick for my taste. so i brought my food home warmed my crawfish étouffée and thinned out the gumbo and it was good. i will be making a return visit to angelina's with my husband in tow he wanted to eat hear but i did it before him .... shhhh don't tell him lol ... so hopefully my food will be hot next time and i'm going to try there red beans and rice :)

update december 8 2015

so funnily brought my famly hear for dinner and extremely disappointed ... one there is no kids menus .. no problem the kid will eat ribs .. at $ 18.99 they should be good ... no drenched in a sauces that tastes of liquid smoke and burnt ribs ... now i got to feed my kid mcdonalds because they suck .. so right now i feel ripped off ,for over priced crapy down home louisiana cooking ... i would have gotten a better tasting meal eaten with the cast of swamp people and duck dynasty to get a taster cheaper meal .... so this will be the last time i will eat hear ... sorry angelina's i had hopes for you and you disappointed us ;( ... oh and are waiter was really no were to be found ... and if you ask for bread it's a no, maybe , yes game , we'll on some days ... it's very limited .... ummm ok

there aren't many new orleans restaurants to choose from in vancouver, so it was doubly fortunate that during my trip to berkeley in 2015-april i got to visit one, and it was rated highly on urbanspoon and yelp. in the still sunny-bright evening, the curtains were drawn, leaving the restaurant dim and cool on the inside. for a place that was pretty busy, table spacing was good -- they aren't sardine-ing you in here. there were two-person tables left, but to help them with the almost constant stream of people coming in the door, i opted for the bar, which proved to have a wide table comfortable for having dinner. normally they weren't quite so busy in the early evening, but it was monday, and on mondays and tuesdays they have half off all red wines. according to the bartender, their top three items were buttermilk fried chicken, fried catfish, and jambalaya. i'd only had catfish twice ( the second time at ouisi bistro in vancouver and it was undercooked ), so third time's a charm, right? fried catfish ($13.99) potato salad, tartar sauce & hushpuppies with honey butter (cocktail sauce available) this turned out to be more like fish and chips, except with fish strips instead of fish fillets. by strips i mean long strips, maybe 1.5 cm thick at most, but generally about 1 cm thick. if you take it apart and remove the crust, you can properly taste the catfish, which is actually nicely done: moist and sweet meat. go very easy on the sauce because it's easy to overwhelm the other flavours. the problem with the plating here is you basically taste either the crust, or the sauce if you use it. to really taste any of the catfish, you need to take off the crust, and for thin strips like this, it is not worth the effort. maybe worst of all is the "wasted" catfish. i think they could easily have done a really nice fillet, considering they fried these just right without overcooking the fish. potato salad had quite a bit of onion in it. six hushpuppies the size of ping-pong balls or

solid. great atmosphere, can be loud. make reservations or take your chances. you can generally get a spot at the bar without a reservation, but the tables adjacent to the bar are an odd height compared to the chairs, so can make for an awkward dining experience. grilled boudin sausage a great starter. do not miss the baked mac & cheese.

love at first bite!. tired of the same old fare we ventured out for a little taste of nola. everything we ordered did not disappoint. hush puppies were first and were cooked perfectly, only my late southern aunties made better. brussel sprouts were to die for and everyone was so busy enjoying main dishes we almost forgot to talk. portions were generous and i'm having leftovers for breakfast... if i can wait that long! on the way out we were all pondering our next visit and what we'd like to try next time. it was my birthday dinner and i'm already looking forward to celebrating with them on the next special occasion!

a feeling of dissatisfaction. . .. there's an old saying, "a fool and his money are soon parted." on april 12, i was such a fool, an ignorant fool, ignorant about cajun food and how greasy it is. if this is "it", my first experience with cajun cooking, then this was my last dabble in the grub. besides the food being greasy, heart attack ready and over-priced, service was so-so at best. paid $160 for 5 of us, all of it grease-laden. then there were service issues: my wife spilled water accidentally. a waiter did a perfunctory swipe on the table but left most of the clean up to us the customers. water remained on the floor for the rest of the evening. the waitress did come by and offer a refill of coffee, but it was the end of the pot,so i got 1/3 of a cup, luke warm at that. she promised to come back with more but must have gotten side-tracked. when we left, she was at a table counting money. when | pay this much money, i expect good service besides good food. this place has neither. why pay so much when chruche's or kfc has the same fare but for much less in price?

angleine's (cajun/creole). oh angeline's, why do you insist on disappointing me? i researched you for weeks, thinking i had finally found a cajun place capable of rivaling what i make at home. alas, i was horribly mistaken. your food, expensive and lackluster, left me more than disappointed. i was taken aback by how utterly terrible your gumbo and etouffee tasted; both were over cooked and had numerous ingredients that overpowered their more delicate companions. the lone saving grace was the decor and friendly service. if i return, it will be for the fried chicken and jambalaya, neither of which i have had the pleasure of trying but i hear are delicious.

gumbo (dish review). i love, and make, a great gumbo. every christmas, i put two days into crafting my own pot, complete with tasso, andouille, chicken, and okra. that is why i was so excited to try angeline's rendition of the traditional nola staple. needless to say, i was extremely disappointed. the roux was insanely dark and so smoky it killed the flavor of every ingredient concealed in it. speaking of the other ingredients, it was so hard to find them amidst the soupy, tar colored broth that i wondered if there was any shrimp and okra at all. all of this wouldn't be so terrible if your gumbo didn't cost as much; $14 for a pretty small serving is unacceptable. i will not be returning for this nasty dish; i suppose i am forced to make more of my own to get the taste of angeline's out of my mouth.

beignets. yes. make sure you get them and eat them while they're warm. i've never been to louisiana, so until i try beignets from there, angeline's are the best around.
