best food in santa fe!. the highlight of our recent visit to beautiful santa fe was surely dinner at the amazing and rightfully acclaimed inn of the anasazi. located in the heart of downtown santa fe, just steps from the historic plaza, this boutique hotel elegantly reflects southwestern style with massive hand-carved doors, sandstone walls, and authentic artwork from the region's diverse heritage. the inn is warm, welcoming and wonderful.

as for dinner it was absolute perfection, thanks to a luxe setting, impeccable service and the genius of executive chef juan bochenski. along with his culinary team chef bochenski presents a menu that not only heralds his global sophistication but celebrates fresh seasonal ingredients and the abundance of local produce.

how could we possibly choose between grilled elk tenderloin with baby root vegetables, goat cheese dumplings, swiss chard and carmelized onion jus or achiote grilled atlantic salmon with vanilla-sweet potato puree, spinach, chayote tempura, cilantro - lime sauce and other delectables? no way! we simply have to come back again, which we surely intend to do next time we're in santa fe.

granted, my sweet tooth is overly active - i love desserts! and all of those offered at the inn of the anasazi were bits of heaven. my cloud 9 for that dinner is pictured here. it was served with a superb dessert wine - king estate 2007 vin glace oregon pinot gris. color me the happiest!

more about this unforgettable dinner later, but meanwhile 10 stars and a standing ovation for the restaurant at the inn of the anasazi.

you should go here. we were in santa fe for five days. we came here twice. that should say it all – but it doesn’t exactly because, as far as we could glean from the local food press, this place goes mostly unnoticed.

it was only by accident we stumbled across it and, having tried a sublime pomegranate martini, were heartened to try the bar menu. six of the largest, juiciest scallops i’ve ever tasted – with pork belly – and a bunch of other good stuff i can’t recall because where we come from (australia) you’d be paying double for such quality. my partner had a steak and egg thing (more involved than it sounds) which was also excellent.

and now, to the reason why we returned – let’s just say another, more renowned restaurant proved underwhelming and, although we loved the local new mexican at places like la choza, all that chilli was proving a little too much for our inexperienced ‘down under’ bellies. ahem. we came here on the last night because we thought it would deliver. and it did. this time in the restaurant – where we found the service and ambiance to be exceptional (but why not more people?). and the food, it was just great. i could go on about it – but suffice to say, if you’re a visitor to santa fe, you should probably go here. and try the scallops.

sometimes you find a place that has a $30 burger and it is worth every penny. this is not one of those cases!

this was a christmas dinner and we opted to stay in our hotel because, frankly, nothing else was open.

we had scallops appetizers, a filet and snapper for main and a toffee bread pudding for desert as our selections from a holiday limited menu. the scallops were excellent as was the snapper. the filet was cooked perfectly, but had the texture of a new york strip. the pudding was dry.

the staff tried to be friendly, but it was clear that they were beat. we were at the 6p seating and they started at noon. net, net, we spent just south of $300 for a $100 dinner.

my suggestion is to take our experience with a grain of salt. give them a try on any day but a holiday. try some appetizers and gauge your experience. our was not good and jus maybe, it had something to do with christmas

not chillin at the anasazi tonight.

what a huge disappointment!!!  ordered the 20 oz cowboy steak to split but they were out.  ended up with a 25 oz steak for more $$$$ and has to send it back twice.  the garlic spinach was cold.  a margarita tasted like straight cheap tequila.  the bar couldn't accommodate 2 drinks and the waitress ultimately ignored us.

took my wife there for a vaentine's dinner, while the meal was what you would expect in a fine dining establishment, the wait was too long, 1:15 minutes from my reservation time to being served - will try it again on a regular day

in the anasazi restaurant and bar luxury travelers have a restaurant worthy of the stunning three-story inn. richly appointed with the tricultural art of new mexico, the restaurant is decidedly rich, tasteful and masculine in its furnishings. meals are as artistic as the ambiance with a healthful salute to the rich bounty of new mexico’s farms from where fresh produce is sourced at the santa fe farmer’s market. through a santa fe purveyor, the anasazi procures elk from the rocky mountains and lamb from northern new mexico. the quality is very much in evidence.

we were there the night of adjournment of the legislature so no one was there except for a big table of whom i suspect was a bunch of lobbyists celebrating. their noise level imitated a jammed restaurant. the staff must have left with the legislators because service was slow and the kitchen was even slower even though our waitress was friendly and helpful. the food made up for all of these shortcomings. the duck enchilada with mole was delicious and the mole was perfect, something that is unusual. the corn and crab soup was delicious - although served only lukewarm. salmon was well cooked and beautifully presented. the chicken was ok but the accompanying mushroom boudin made the dish memorable. the flan was well-made and smooth, not the grainy version that has become too common. definitely worth a revisit when the lobbyists are gone.

close to the plaza so it's popular with tourists who can't decide whether they want inside or out and middle aged fat women who shouldn't be wearing revealing skimpy gym shorts. entertainment aside, our server was delightful. the bartender was expert with old fashioneds and manhattans. the botanas were delicious: squash blossom quesadillas and queso fundido with chopped spanish chorizo instead of crumbled mexican. crowded but you should be able to find a table.
